Hi Jackie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, I lived abroad for several years. That’s where my love of travel began. There’s nothing like visiting a new country, visiting historic landmarks, eating the local food, and fully immersing yourself in the culture. When I began thinking about a 2nd income stream, I didn’t know where to begin. After exploring different ideas, I found an ad for a newly opened local Expedia Cruises office recruiting independent travel advisors. I decided to attend to see what it entailed. After the open house, I thought I’d go for it; travel was not foreign to me; I could make my hours, which meant my new venture would not interfere with my full-time job or family life.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
One month after I began the travel business, the world shut down due to COVID-19. I took the time I would have spent in the Expedia Cruises office to complete my online supplier training. As more time passed and the world began to reopen, I had to build my client base. Where would I begin? A lot of this is putting yourself out there, in the community and on social media. Supplier training is never-ending, from new resorts opening; to itineraries changing and ongoing promotions.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your business.
As an independent travel advisor, my role is consultative. I assist the client with the planning and booking every aspect of their vacation. I deal directly with travel suppliers. One sees the name Expedia Cruises and thinks cruises are all we do. We do it all, cruises, all-inclusive resorts, hotels, vacation homes, air travel, rail/land excursions, and travel insurance to protect the client from all the things that can happen up to and on their trip. I take on only a few clients at a time. This allows me to focus on each guest and ensure every part of their trip is perfect.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
