Meet Shani Cox of Shani Selene Artistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shani Cox.

Hi Shani, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My passion for skincare started at an adolescent age. However, my journey began during my sophomore year at the University of South Florida. Possessing a long-term goal to practice in the field of Dermatology stressed the importance of being cognizant regarding the treatments and procedures available. I scheduled a chemical peel with a local esthetician who worked under a Dermatologist. Prior to the treatment, she stressed the fact that I had beautiful skin and that although this procedure would serve as a great “refresher”, it was geared towards those with hyperpigmentation and scarring. While I understood the purpose behind the peel, I proceeded with the treatment because I wanted first-hand experience with this particular service in order to inform future clients. Unfortunately, due to her lack of performing a patch test prior to administering the peel and applying it deeper than instructed, I was left with significant hypopigmentation on my right cheekbone. When I contacted her to inquire if this was a normal part of the process, she informed me that I was the first individual that this happened to.

As a collegiate athlete required to practice outdoors, I had to find the quickest way to cover my fresh wound as I nursed it back to health (this is what prompted me to begin wearing makeup). This traumatizing experience served as one of the focal points for pursuing medicine. It’s unfortunate, but we lack service providers who are knowledgeable in regards to caring for ethnic skin. Initially, my business solely entailed makeup application, but I was secretly using that as a placeholder until I obtained my esthetics license. I enjoyed creating magic with the touch a brush during each appointment, but when I realized I could assist others by enhancing their natural beauty without involving makeup, that’s when my passion was reignited.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There will always be challenges within entrepreneurship or any business, but that’s what makes the entire process beautiful. The most challenging aspect for me was keeping my clients who had been suffering with skin issues encouraged. After dealing with acne for an extensive period of time, trying everything on the market and yielding a lack of results, it can become frustrating. Thankfully, after we reviewed their skincare regimen and agreed that this is process requires patience and is a team effort, they are ready to begin. Once they see the progress they’ve made, they’re smiling from ear to ear.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Shani Selene Artistry?
As a licensed esthetician pursuing a career in Dermatology, I specialize in corrective skincare. A majority of my clients suffer from hyperpigmentation, scarring and texture. Therefore, the most common procedures that I utilize in order to combat those issues are Collagen Induction Therapy, with and without Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), chemical peels and other minimally invasive procedures. Due to my interest in concierge medicine, I practice in a similar facet. My current clients have direct access to me, everything is individually tailored and we spend significant amounts of time interacting. I’m a firm believer that the system that I abide by sets me apart from the masses. In regards to my brand, my defining moment would have to be the launch of my eBook, “Skinvestment”. Essentially, it’s a manuscript with tips, tools and resources, not only for upcoming esthetician entrepreneurs and those that would like to enter the industry but for anyone who wants to start a business. We all need direction and a little encouragement when it comes to embarking on new endeavors. The most important aspect of Shani Selene Artistry is that the best results are achieved by collaboration. As the service provider, it’s important that we maintain consistency when it comes to your treatment, but as the client, you must uphold your portion of the agreement with your at home regimen.

What makes you happy?
This is an amazing question and one that I’m frequently asked. During this pandemic, the focus required to sustain my business, as well as prepare for medical school has posed as a challenge on some days. However, I’d say waking up with the ability to assist those with their quality of living in regards to the health of their skin brings me joy. As cliche as it sounds, the fulfillment I obtain from seeing the smiles on my client’s faces when we’ve reached their goal outweighs the financial gain. Although I have (8) years of experience beneath my belt, there’s always new information to be learned and I look forward to what the future holds.
