Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelina Jacobe.
Hi Angelina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I fell in love with makeup when I first saw Michelle Phan’s makeup tutorials on YouTube when I was 9 years old. My mom bought me some makeup to play with but would check the ingredients to make sure they were safe to put on my sensitive skin. I always experimented with makeup and would try to make my makeup by mixing oils and powders. When I graduated high school I was considering beauty school, but I chose chemical engineering as my major so that I could go to college and pursue product formulation as a career.
On the side, I started an Instagram page since I was passionate about makeup and wanted to post my makeup looks for fun. I attended BeautyConLA back in 2018 and posted some of the products I received from the different booths and one of the brands reached out to me wanting to gift me some products. I was so excited because this was the first time a brand noticed me and wanted to send me products to try. During COVID makeup was a huge creative outlet for me. I would always post my looks during that time and that’s when more opportunities came. I got accepted into the YesStyle Influencers and Campus Trendsetters Programs where I was able to try new products and create new content.
Along this social media journey, I was able to meet so many talented individuals in the makeup community, be featured on some brands’ Instagram and websites, attend a few brand events, and collaborate with brands like Jason Wu Beauty, Glamnetic, Purlisse, Pacifica, and IPSY and EM Cosmetics both which were started by Michelle Phan. This makeup journey has truly come full circle and there’s so much more to come. I’m so grateful to everyone who has supported me through this journey and I welcome anyone who would like to come along this journey with me!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the main challenge for me is burnout from social media. Sometimes it’s draining to scroll and take in all the noise or to see all of these trends I want to hop on, but don’t have the time to. I think another challenge was to realize my worth.
I’ve come to the point where I try not to accept “gifting in exchange for an in-feed post or reels” campaigns unless there is monetary compensation because I feel like I value my content and I put a lot of energy into my work even if it’s for myself. So when I reply to big brands who can afford to compensate me and I get rejected requesting their budget, sometimes it does make me wonder if my content is good enough.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I currently create makeup tutorials for Instagram and carry those over to YouTube Shorts. My videos consist of the application of my makeup looks whether it is me getting ready to go out, getting ready to go to work, doing some makeup therapy, or experimenting with different color combinations for my eyeshadow.
I love to watch how people apply their base makeup, so a lot of my videos on Instagram Reels are me applying my base makeup. I’m most proud of the makeup looks that I did during COVID. That’s when I had more downtime to sit for hours on the floor drawing lanterns, balloons, dragons, hearts, and koi fish all over my face and it was a fun time.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I think an important lesson I learned along my journey is to be myself and love myself.
