Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Cat.
Hi Tom, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After graduating college, I became hyper-focused on trying to perfect drawing Traditional Japanese designs. Frankly, I wasn’t good at it. So, after I got out of my own way, I began incorporating some of the drawing techniques I learned in school and drawing the people around me. I started to get positive feedback from creating work that came naturally, which is when I knew I was on the right track.
The beautiful thing about most of my portrait drawings is you can’t quite make out what their sexual orientation or race is. My hope is that this leads the viewer to realize, regardless of where we came from or how we identify ourselves, we’re all just a bunch of walking shapes and lines.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I’ve gone through my own personal challenges of dealing with imposter syndrome and comparison. That’s why one of the primary missions of Tom Cat Atelier is to encourage others to divulge in their creative urges, whether it be in a professional manner or for leisure. Enough people are setting creative expectations, and we’re here to alleviate people of that pressure.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Tom Cat Atelier is a creative emporium to showcase our work and assist in awakening the inner creative in us all. Our “Cool Cat” interviews of current up-and-coming artists serve the purpose of making them relatable to the everyday person and hopefully give someone a stepping stone to begin their journey on indulging in some form of artistry. Whether you’re an engineer or slinging grouper sandwiches at a local seafood spot, we believe there’s an artist in all of us. We’re in the process of building out our emporium so stay tuned!
What matters most to you? Why?
Developing a creative hub, both virtually and in person. I believe that art and music are the tools that blur humanity’s differences and leave you with an impactful message that can sit in your bones for 10+ years. With all the craziness going on in the world, I think this is what we need to encourage meaningful change.
