Five years ago, my life took an unexpected turn when I was involved in an accident that left me dealing with chronic pain. Before that incident, I was a vibrant young woman ready to conquer the world. Although I still possess that same spirit, I now face daily challenges I have learned to overcome. Having graduated from the University of Central Florida with a degree in broadcast journalism and a minor in writing, I initially found joy working as a news producer at a local TV station. Starting my shifts at 2 a.m. for the weekday morning show, I met my now-husband, Jerry, a reporter on the same schedule. Our shared passion for journalism and travel brought us together, and we eventually fell in love.
Despite the initial excitement, I gradually realized that my career was not fulfilling my aspirations. Every day, I found myself writing about sad and depressing stories, longing to shed light on the goodness in the world and raise awareness about important issues. Following my accident, I knew it was time for a positive change in my life, which led me to embark on a journey of entrepreneurship. Thus, I founded Mastropieces Photography, cleverly combining my maiden name, Mastroianni, with the concept of masterpieces. Initially, my business was centered around capturing the happy moments in life through photography. Nevertheless, I had to adjust and develop to stay afloat due to the pandemic. As a result, my business has undergone a significant transformation. It now operates as a fully-fledged content creation company, providing various services, including video production, social media management, and marketing. In line with this expansion, I recently rebranded my company as Mastropieces Productions.
Ever since I launched my business in 2018, countless prospects have unfurled before me. I have had the opportunity to interview renowned NFL stars and TV personalities and the privilege of collaborating with well-established Fortune 500 corporations like Disney and Ford Motor Company. I also have numerous articles and photos published in magazines and websites nationwide. Furthermore, I recently became a mother to my son Luca. While learning to balance motherhood and entrepreneurship is challenging, it is also the most rewarding job I have ever had. Despite the challenges over the last five years, my business is thriving, earning nominations for the Seminole County Business Awards and winning the Best Photographer in Sanford award for two consecutive years. I now look back and see it was all worth it! By deviating from my news career and charting my course, I found myself in the right place. I am thrilled that I now have the opportunity to share others’ stories and contribute to shining light on the goodness in the world.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Throughout my journey as an entrepreneur, I have encountered numerous challenges that have proven rewarding. What initially began as a photography company transformed into a multimedia business during the unprecedented times of the pandemic. As Covid-19 struck, my immediate focus shifted towards how my business could contribute to the community. Unable to conduct in-person photography sessions, I had to adapt my livelihood while also finding a way to assist fellow business owners.
One of my initial actions was creating a targeted Facebook group specifically catering to my city, Sanford. This platform swiftly became a valuable space for supporting those in need. I encouraged small businesses to utilize the group for advertising their products and services. The collaborative effort of our community in building a brighter future served as a profound realization of the significance of social media during the pandemic. Recognizing the opportunity to help these struggling businesses establish an online presence, I revamped my business model and contacted companies with limited or no social media activity. Gradually, I acquired clients and commenced marketing services for numerous local establishments, including restaurants, realtors, magazines, and stores. Leveraging my skills in visual storytelling, I crafted compelling branding narratives.
Simultaneously, I turned to my journalism and writing background for innovative solutions during these challenging times. I secured contracts for photography and writing assignments from various magazines across Florida. It became evident that this was the direction I wanted my company to take. As businesses reopened and events resumed, the demand for capturing and showcasing these moments emerged. Consequently, I expanded my range of services to include videography and voiceover acting.
Moreover, a local store in Downtown Sanford expressed interest in selling my landscape photographs. Witnessing my work displayed for sale ignited a new sense of accomplishment. With inquiries from individuals throughout Florida, I offered the option to purchase my artwork through my website, Mastropieces.com, and at the Colonial Room Country Store in Sanford, FL. These hurdles over the years have pushed me to evolve as an individual and propelled my company into the limelight. Undoubtedly, Covid-19 remains a devastating global phenomenon. However, our ability to adapt and embrace change is paramount. And that is precisely what I did. Thus far, the results have been fruitful, and my business continues to thrive.
