Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Garcia.
Hi Erika, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello. I am 27 years old, I am Venezuelan, I have one year in the United States of America, a degree in Cs and Military Arts, Logistics Mention, I studied at the Military Academy of Venezuelan Aviation, and I graduated as a Lieutenant, a suitable pilot! Because of my principles and ideals, I had political differences with the government of my country! And I needed to get out of the same. That’s why my life as a migrant began! I moved to Ecuador, where I had many difficulties and obstacles. However, I never gave up, and together with my husband, we overcame every obstacle! Then, in 2019, I got pregnant for the first time, and with great enthusiasm, I was waiting for the birth! When I was two and a half months pregnant, I had an altercation with an Ecuadorian lady, who, for Xenophobia, said many insults and physically assaulted me! I fell and lost my baby due to that situation; I was depressed for a long time until, in 2020, I got pregnant again, but this time, the pandemic came, my husband was fired from work, and we didn’t have to support ourselves! At that moment, my mother told me she was knitting a hat for my daughter, who was about to be born! I told him to teach me! And that’s how this love for art began. At first, it was just a hobby, but as I learned and perfected the technique, I realized I could sell some of my products! So, I decided to start publishing! Then, due to other circumstances that arose on the day of my childbirth! It was when my husband and I decided to leave Ecuador! And that’s how we started the journey to this great country! When I arrived, my husband started working, and by mutual judgment, we refused to go to a Daycare or Kindercare for our daughter! So, I took all the risks and gradually made artisanal products! And create my brand and manage it as best I can! I would like with all my heart to be able to live from this! It’s what I love! So, I put all my effort and strength into achieving it! And to generate income to help and contribute to my home and simultaneously care for my family!
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
One obstacle has been the language since it limits my reach to more people! I have also had to learn to do other trades, such as managing networks and photography in a basic way, to manage my crochet business!
Thanks for sharing that. You could tell us more about your work. next
I’m a fabric designer! I specialize in crochet crafts and handmade products, including clothing, amigurumi, accessories, and home décor. I am also dedicated to creating these patterns! Crochet is a very laborious product, but I love working on it, and people know me because very few young people dedicate themselves to this beautiful work. My company needs to grow, and I will continue working daily to make it so!
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about this city is its peace and tranquility! I like the weather the least, but I can live with it.
