Rising Stars: Meet Megan Cahill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Cahill.

Megan Cahill

Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to Orlando in 2017 to attend UCF and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Radio-Television in 2023. Since moving to Orlando, I have found a home in the wonderfully inclusive community of artists. I like to dip my hands in buckets, so my origin story is a little sporadic. I began music lessons with piano at the age of eight, then picked up guitar at eleven. Music was a private practice of mine, so playing in a band never seemed possible. Once in Orlando, I was surrounded by highly talented musicians who pushed me to get out of my shell. Thus, Surf Witch was born. I am planning the release of our first EP and gearing up to go into the studio again to record a Lofi acoustic record. My creative expression is multi-dimensional, and I am most sensitive to sound and light. I received my first Kodak disposable when I was four and cashed out my first roll within 10 minutes. Fast forward a few years, and my older sister received a Polaroid One 600 for Christmas, a camera she hardly used. One year, as younger sisters do, I was rifling through her closet and found the dusty and discarded camera. I found a store that sold 600 films through quick research, bought my first pack, and began shooting. Orlando was the true birthplace of my film photography. I bought my first point-and-shoot, my first SLR, and my first TLR; it’s where I learned how to develop and scan my film. It was these experiences and lessons that brought me to today. Now, I consider myself an analog junkie. Photo technology may advance faster than a New York minute, but I will always bring recognition and praise to its roots.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
An artist’s journey is never smooth. It has twists and turns, ups and downs, so the ability to adapt is of the utmost importance. Some of my biggest obstacles have been with confidence and theory. But as the old saying goes, practice makes perfect!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a musician, film photographer, and analog enthusiast. I am the frontwoman and songwriter for Surf Witch, an indie alternative genre band. I am also a photographer who specializes in film. I shoot, develop, and scan all of my photos. Recently, I was commissioned by Locol Arts for an art installation in one of their new buildings. The whole series was done on film. I also find myself in the realm of filmmaking. At UCF, I made two short films for the UCF Arboretum. One was featured in the Florida Environmental Film Festival, and the last was featured at the Cinema Verde Film Festival, where it received the Education Award. I am very proud of my work at the Arboretum. Since graduating, I have been throwing myself into every creative opportunity possible as I try to find my way as a professional and eventually full-time artist, whether working on concerts at The Beacham/The Social, working on film sets, taking pictures, or playing music. Every opportunity has been a rewarding experience and is guiding me towards my dreams. My passion, perseverance, and adaptability set me apart from other creatives. I am a creative pocket knife, and I do what I do simply for the love of creating.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
I have been lucky to have some fantastic mentors: my guitar teacher Brian, Jennifer Elliott from the Arboretum, my parents, and so on. As for supporters and advocates, I owe it all to my friends and bandmates. They inspire me, share much love, and raise me to heights I never thought I’d reach.
