KatieJo McGhan

Hi KatieJo, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been drawing creatures and nature my whole life! I have always struggled with confidence, and art has always been helpful with that. Finishing a drawing means overcoming the mean thoughts. I am fortunate to have a very encouraging Mother who has always believed in me. I started with graphite; pen and colored pencil have been my favorite mediums for the past 15 years. Within the last 2 years, I’ve started experimenting with digital art, which is easier on my hands! My art reminds people of the light in the world and within ourselves.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Self-confidence and being stuck in the dreadful service industry cycle of work and sleep, paycheck to paycheck, left no energy for creation or myself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I create to remind others to look at the world with a childlike wonder, respect, and admiration for Mother Nature. I enjoy turning my friends into whatever mythological/magical character they remind me of! I specialize in prismacolored pencil, linework, and mural work. My biggest mural in town is in Cloud Parlor Cocoa Beach! I grow creatively with every collaboration and every challenge! I try to be as authentic as possible by being transparent about mental health, body dysmorphia, and the struggle with self-love. I think authenticity is so important, especially for the younger generations.

How do you think about luck?
I’m lucky to have a Mother to lean on when a single person can’t afford a place to live on their own; I can stay with her and follow my dreams of financial independence without sacrificing my soul. Thankful doesn’t cut it.
