Today we’d like to introduce you to April Ramirez.
Hi, April; having you on the platform is an honor. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
This is a second career for me. I spent 21 years in the Air Force. For most of my career, I was in a job I didn’t enjoy. I told my husband whatever I did next would be a job that I loved, enjoyed, and had a passion for. I was in nursing school off and on and wasn’t sure that was where I truly wanted to be with all the stress and liability. I knew I wanted to make a difference in other people’s lives and have more freedom and flexibility. After 21 years of having no real say in my location, hours, shifts, uniform, hair, nails, and almost every aspect of my life. I did about a year and a half of soul-searching before finally deciding on massage therapy.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Any time you start a new small business, growth is always a struggle. I am truly blessed because the space I rent is in a suite with 3 rooms. So, I share an office space with two other massage therapists with a business. We don’t coordinate hours or schedules. We just set up our businesses how we would like. They are both so knowledgeable and supportive. It is rare to find women supporting women in business, but I found the jackpot where I am now. God truly orchestrated the perfect plan by opening all the right doors. Now, I am trying to be faithful to his timeline about the growth of my business.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I chose my business name because massage therapists are like the Wildflowers of the medical field. We are all so very different in what we do. My class of 15 was all taught the same information by the same instructor, yet we were all so unique and different in how we used our massage therapy schools. I love how many different massage therapy techniques exist and how they allow each therapist to take their approach as they craft their skill truly. I focus more on relaxation and the type of sessions. I offer sugar scrubs for the back and feet, mud masque for the back, hot stone, cupping, percussion, and heat therapy. I would love to be able to provide a spa experience on a more budget-friendly level. Massage therapy truly affects every system of the body positively. It also works wonders on the mind when you get a massage regularly.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in an Air Force family. My dad and stepmom both retired from the Air Force. My older brother served for 8 years. I enlisted at the age of 17. My husband was in the Air Force for 12 years, and two of my brothers-in-law still serve in the Air Force. I like to think that growing up as a military child comes with struggles of not really being able to live and be raised in just one town your whole life, always having to move and leave friends and family, but the adventures you get to experience, the places you get to see, the things you get to do and try to make up for that. I love traveling, seeing new places, and trying new things.
