Life & Work with Sydney Cope of Maitland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Cope.

Sydney Cope

Hi Sydney, It’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My story starts in Dallas, Texas, where I was born and raised, which was the start of my passion for being creative. Most of my childhood consisted of training in dance, music, and acting, which led me to travel around the country pursuing what I love to do. Music and dance led me to opportunities to perform live and also create the music that I wrote to express my emotions. Eventually, I moved to Los Angeles for several years to continue my career, which brought me great memories and opened my eyes to the film industry. Once Covid-19 hit, I moved back to Texas, where I had to figure out what I would do next. That pause in my career led me to explore Full Sail University! I moved to Orlando to study Film at Full Sail to expand my knowledge about the film industry beyond being in front of a camera. I’ve known since a young age that I love storytelling, and I’ve been pursuing that my whole life! I’ll be graduating from Full Sail at the end of March with a Film Bachelor of Science Degree, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter in my life and the adventures to come!

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but I’ve never been defeated enough to give up on my dreams. I’ve had to experience a lot of rejection in my career, but when the opportunity does come, it makes it all worth it. I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason, and when one thing doesn’t go in the direction I thought, something better always comes out of it! I’ve adapted to have thick skin and not let anything put me down or turn me away from what I love doing. The biggest struggle I’ve faced is the fluctuation of staying busy and dealing with slow times. However, when I am not as busy as usual, I prioritize my creative endeavors and work on projects like music or films!

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m creative, and I love storytelling through both music and films! My past experiences have been through working on several diverse projects in the film industry, and I can proudly say I have two films I’ve been a part of on Netflix! I’ve also done multiple films for Lifetime and got hired as a dancer for several episodes on Nickelodeon. I’m most proud of the original songs that I wrote, and from that, I’ve directed and produced multiple music videos to portray the story and the lyrics. My favorite thing is to create and share stories that other individuals can relate to in some way, and I’m always looking for new ways to grow and continue to build my portfolio!

What matters most to you? Why?
Happiness matters the most to me because life is too short to get caught up in the negative aspects of society. I’ve always strived to have a positive mindset with everything I do, even if times might get stressful or impossible. My family, friends, and creative outlets help me keep a smile every day!
