Meet Shelby Finkelstein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Finkelstein.

Shelby Finkelstein

Hi Shelby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began working for a Human Resources Consulting Firm and managing one of their Largest Global Clients. I loved my job. Fast forward to 2006, when our first daughter was born, and I realized that I craved flexibility and more time at home with her. This was also when I became fascinated with how fast she was growing and changing and how the only way to freeze time was with a picture. The idea of becoming a photographer was a small ember that, over days, became a roaring fire. In my heart, I knew this would be the perfect career to give me time with our daughter and allow me to utilize my business degree and experience in sales, marketing, client relations, and creativity. In April of 2009, just after the birth of our second child, Simply Shelby Photography was established. I can remember thinking how this would be a great way to make some money on the side and offset a few of the expenses that came along with having two small children, but never in my wildest dreams did I think I could turn this into a profitable full-time business that both contributed to our household income, make me feel accomplished and successful while at the same time still having the ability to attend every class field trip, dance performance, basketball game and even leap a Troop of Girl Scouts. Over the years, I sought amazing mentors, many educational opportunities, and, most importantly, business classes for photographers. I learned that there are many very talented photographers out there, but being able to run a successful business keeps us making a living off something we consider a joy and not a job.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There is no single smooth road in life, but I know that some of the bumps along the way make us more intelligent and better able to navigate them in the future. Sometimes, we need these obstacles to help us learn and grow. My path was only occasionally smooth, but so much of what I faced ended up helping me make better business choices. In the beginning, I photographed everything and anything under the sun. I now know better and only photograph what I love and sell products I want to purchase as a mom who values family art in her home. I have made better pricing, workflow, time management, and marketing decisions by discovering what did not work firsthand. There is so much value in trial and error and sticking true to yourself.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Simply Shelby Photography is an award-winning, on-location boutique studio specializing in modern baby, children, family, and maternity photography. I use primarily natural light and believe in taking a more “lifestyle” approach to photography. I would describe my style as “PERFECTLY IMPERFECT.” Being a mother of three has inspired me to be playful and connect with my subjects. Although I am known for my bright and crisp photographic style, I also provide an enjoyable experience. As a true custom photographer, I offer only high-quality photographic products. I will assist my family in deciding the best way to show off their new family art! This process starts with a personal visit to their home, measuring walls and possible areas to display their new family art, an in-person ordering session complete with a high-definition video of their fully edited images, and delivery and wall installation of their family memories. This four-step experience is truly what sets me apart from others. This past year, I received several awards, such as the 2023 Playground Magazine Family Favorite Photographer and the Best of Florida Regional Winner for 2023 (Guide to Florida). I was also featured as a top 100 Artist for the NAPCP (National Association of Portrait and Child Photographers). I am most proud of receiving a Master Photographer Certificate from the NAPCP for Family Photography, a personal goal of mine to achieve. I also enjoy giving back to our local photography and charitable community by donating my time to organizations and taking on leadership roles.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
The most important advice I could give is to seek a great mentor! Be sure to educate yourself as much in business as you do your craft, and most importantly, know your value and what you bring to this industry.
