Rising Stars: Meet Kara Winslow

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Winslow.

Kara Winslow

Hi Kara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I attended Rollins College as a theater major. Upon graduating, I moved back to Gainesville, taught theater, and worked at a professional theater. While there, I started auditioning for film and television. I was cast in a small, independent film in Gainesville, and on the first day of filming, the makeup artist had a bag from CVS with products I was allergic to, so I asked if I could do my makeup. 3 days into filming, she stopped showing up, and the Director asked if I would help everyone else with makeup. I did so without thinking, and a year later, the producer of that film referred me to MTV to do the makeup for an AXE commercial they were producing. I was cast on HSN as a spokesmodel for a cosmetics line between those two instances. I was with that brand for 10 years and was promoted to the official USA makeup artist. Through these experiences, I accidentally launched a business as an allocation makeup artist and have traveled all over the country doing makeup for everyone from politicians to pro athletes to Hollywood movie stars, with my work appearing on multiple national networks as well as working with locals for everything from weddings to family photos and prom make up.

Let’s dig deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you overcome?
It has been a roller coaster of a career. There needs to be more consistency in the work. COVID-19 devastated the industry, but the business has slowly come back to life since then.

Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us more about your work.
I’m known for how makeup works with cameras and lighting. I did not learn how to do makeup from TikTok or Instagram. I learned it from being on set and working directly with a cosmetic line to make it work best with HD cameras; my 20+ years of working in the film, television, and theater industries helped me set myself apart from other makeup artists in the area.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a very meek, shy child who only came to life on stage. I was always very creative and grew up loving makeup, having zero clue that it could become a career.
