Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Cain.
Hi Seth, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in the church. I’ve seen both the good and the not-so-good sides of Christianity. I’ve traveled extensively across the country and around the world. I’ve seen people with a lot as well as people living with next to nothing. I’ve learned through my experiences in this life that every human life has value. Most of us want to live the best lives possible and help make the world better. All of our lives are comprised of a series of events that lead us from or to one place or another, and every experience we have serves to shape us in both known and unknown ways. My path has led me all over the place, both geographically and spiritually, and for the past decade, my journey has led me to use my experiences to teach the good folks at The Foundry Church in Winter Springs, FL.
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
My time at The Foundry has been an absolute roller coaster. The early years especially. I faced some extraordinarily dark and challenging times as I’ve worked to transition the church (as well as people’s mindsets) into a more open, accepting, and inclusive place. I’ve learned that every obstacle is an opportunity, and patience can go a long way. It can be challenging to push back against people’s long-held beliefs and convictions, especially regarding God, faith, and religion. It’s been a kind of old dog new tricks situation for many years, but thankfully, we are on the other side of those early difficulties and are now in a place of incredible freedom and love.
Thanks. What else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One of my primary responsibilities is crafting creative and inspiring messages. This is one of my favorite things to be able to do. The whole world is our toolbox to learn and draw from as we search for wisdom and truth. Everything is our teacher, meaning lessons can come from anywhere if we are open to it. Whether we’re talking about dirt, the universe, tomatoes, Sinead O’connor, chickens, or ancient poetry, it’s all packed with potential for us to learn something. I have used all these things and many more in my messages throughout the years. We live in a fascinating world full of wonder and insight, and if people say they believe in God or some form of higher power, even if they can’t fully describe what that means, then we would do well to be open to all that the world has to offer.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
The people who know me or know what I do know that I’m pretty open about my life. Both the good and the not so good are continually on display. I do my best to be as authentic as possible. I do many things I’m proud of; I run ultra-marathons, write books, paint, surf (when I can), garden, and have a food forest. There are also things I’m less proud of. I know I can quickly make a mess of things, lose my temper, say things I don’t mean, and I’ve gotten very good at saying, “I’m sorry.” There’s not much of anything I could say or do that the people who know me would be surprised by. I don’t know if that’s good or bad.
