Today we’d like to introduce you to Alina Alcantara.
Hi Alina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my career as an actor in 2015 with a community theatre production of IN THE HEIGHTS and continued booking various projects since then. My first significant contract happened in 2017 with DESTINY OF DESIRE and MAN OF LA MANCHA. In 2018, I was let go from my “steady” job as a flight attendant, which was the catalyst that sent me into full-time acting. In the following years, I ventured into different mediums – theme park work, voiceover, commercial and film work. I finally registered Sol y Luna Creative LLC in 2022 and have continued my artistic path, leaving possibilities open for other creative endeavors.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There is no such thing as a smooth road to success and following your dreams 🙂 The adage “feast or famine” is very much a reality. And I have certainly experienced that. The pandemic in 2020 was a serious blow to the entertainment industry, and many opportunities had dried up. My first contract working at Disney came to an abrupt end. Theatres closed their doors. I honestly contemplated that the dream was over and it was time to return to the corporate world, but I didn’t. 🙂
Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
I have become a bit of a “Jill of all trades” in the industry, for which I’m very grateful. It’s been my on-the-job training, for I did not go to school to learn what I do! Theatre is where I started, and it is my true love as far as I’m concerned. There is something magical about live performances in front of an audience. That energy is indescribable. But I have also worked in film and a handful of commercials, as well as voiceover, hosting corporate and livestream events, and as an on-screen guide for corporate training videos in English and Spanish! In the Orlando community, I’m known for portraying Abuela Claudia in IN THE HEIGHTS, which I cherish and am very proud of. But I think I am most proud of who I am off stage and away from the spotlight. I’ve been on a journey of growth, healing, and self-love that has helped me step more into my authenticity and be a joy bringer and energy shifter in every room I walk into. I am positively impacting the lives of others whose paths I cross, and that is, quite frankly, the legacy I wish to leave, the mark I want to make on this earth.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
The first thing that popped into my mind was Christmases in NYC. No further comments are needed. There is a special magic about that city at Christmas time, and I have yet to replicate it anywhere else.
