Check Out Nahir Solis Moyet’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nahir Solis Moyet.

Nahir Solis Moyet

Hi Nahir, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story began almost 9 years ago when my husband and I decided to adopt a set of three siblings from foster care. At the time, the youngest was just 8 months old, our middle baby was about 20 months old, and our eldest was 3. We didn’t have any children, and we knew we wanted more than one, so we decided on a sibling set to keep them together. We dove into the deep end of the parenting pool! We had no idea what we were doing, and things got challenging and complicated working full time and making sure they were and had what they needed, taking them to daycare every day. I had to stop working to stay home with them because they needed a full-time mom. We sold our house and moved to make ends meet, and the kids just thrived. Over the years, we found that all three kiddos ended up having special needs and needing lots of therapies and various specialist doctors to help them. I could not return to work full-time and made the best of it. I embraced being a stay-at-home mom and worked on giving them everything they could want or need.

My love of baking started when I decided to make our youngest daughter’s smash cake for her 1st birthday. I had no idea what I was doing! I used a box mix and a can of store-bought frosting, found a tiny star-tip piping contraption, and pipped flowers all over the little cake. It was a mess, but she and her siblings loved it! I decided from then on that my kids should have a unique and special cake for all of their birthdays, so I do what any logical person does. I attended YouTube University and binged a bunch of baking videos. I watched shows on TV about baking to learn about flavor combinations, and over the years, I experimented and practiced, so my skills grew. As the kids grew and saw my new abilities, their cake requests also grew! Before I knew it, I was making three-tiered candy-themed cakes with various delicious flavors, hero cakes with pyro-techniques, and even a chocolate-molded ninja figure version of my son. I have made all of their birthday cakes since we adopted them, and they have all been exceptional to them.

My family witnessed my growing skills and enjoyed cake after cake with each get-together. They started saying things like, “You should sell these seriously” and “This is the best cake I have ever eaten!” Now, family is usually biased, and I kept my skills as a baker top secret for a long time! I didn’t want people to know I could bake simply because I didn’t have the time to turn it into a business and get busy making cakes. My kids, after all, still have unique needs. We needed to move a few times over the years, but the last move allowed us to live closer to schools and therapists who could better support our kids’ needs. After finding the right support combination, the kids started thriving even more, and I could finally let go a bit from my responsibilities as a stay-at-home mom to three special needs kids. The newfound freedom provided me with time to build a business with the skills I had. After being home with them for all those years, I have two skills that I could turn into a business: my background in housing finance and baking. Since the real estate market is what it is, I decided to pour all my skills and entrepreneurship knowledge into cakes!

After years of making kid’s cakes, I bet you are asking yourself, how did I leap into wedding cakes?! The answer is straightforward: after years of kid’s cakes. I needed to do anything but kid’s cakes! Doing this also keeps my own kid’s cakes unique still. They only see me make kid’s cakes just for them. I researched wedding cake designs, went back to YouTube University, and much more to learn more design techniques. I practiced hard and even found a mentor in the wedding industry for over 25 years. I knew the processes needed to run a successful wedding cake business. More importantly, I developed my style, which is modern, elegant, and even haute couture. I offer a traditional wedding menu of flavors that is elevated and sophisticated over what is usually provided. Pulling from my Puerto Rican roots, I also feature Latin American flavors that fill my clients with a sense of fun nostalgia and keep them coming back for more. I love what I do, and as complicated as my journey through motherhood has been, it has also been life-changing and very fulfilling. My kids have taught me so much. They have taught me to stop and take the time to make each moment memorable. I’m glad I can share my talents with other families and lovely young couples just starting their own lives and families.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest obstacles have always been around balancing my work with my kids. Their needs make it so that unexpected things come up frequently. I have had to learn to shift quickly and think fast on my feet! As a baker, though, I can set my schedule and work around their needs, so whenever something comes up, I can work around them.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make unique, custom, modern cakes highlighting the couple’s story. I like to dive into things like how they met and what is important to them. Sometimes, I’ll even hide easter egg decorations as nods to their story. Making each one unique to the couple is my top priority. Have you ever watched a cooking show on the Food Network and thought, “Man, that sounds delicious; I could try that!” My cakes bring shows like this alive by providing flavor combinations that tap into a culinary experience more than just tasting well. My flavors pull from tested creative minds and combine ingredients many wouldn’t think should go well together. My cakes are the type of cakes that you find minimal leftovers of because everyone ended up helping themselves to some extra. My goal with every cake is for the couple to think back in 10-plus years and say, “That cake was amazing and delicious,” with an extra twinkle in their eye.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
I want to credit my husband for helping me succeed and for always supporting my crazy ideas over the years. He allowed me to turn the dining room into a cake studio and is fine with me taking up every possible inch of storage space at home for my business. I’ll likely end up in a commercial kitchen, which is my goal, but until that happens, I’m glad to have the support at home. It also really helps to have free labor when washing baking pans!
