Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Christensen.
Hi Chris, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My background is originally in engineering, but the company I worked for almost 10 years got bought out and started laying off employees. At the time, I was a director of their mechanical engineering department. Since there wasn’t much engineering work in Orlando and I have always loved real estate, my wife and I decided to get our real estate licenses together. My wife started full-time, and I worked part-time until I eventually got let go at the worst time possible. We had a new home and baby, and I had no job. We decided to work hard and make it happen. We grew from nothing working out of our home to being one of Central Florida’s most prominent luxury real estate brokerages. We had 5 offices and over 110 Realtors. We also became the exclusive affiliate of Christie’s International Real Estate for Central Florida. My wife and I then decided to sell everything and focus on what we love: selling houses. We sold the entire company to Sotheby’s and concentrated on selling homes. Last year, we closed close to $80 million in sales, which puts us among the top 10 realtors in Central Florida, which currently has 27,000 licensed realtors.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not a smooth road. There are many long hours and stress to get to where we are currently. Initially, going from a career where I collected a salary every week to being self-employed in a 100% commission-based industry with no guarantees at all was tough.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My wife and I have been selling real estate for over 16 years. We specialize in luxury homes priced over $1 million. Our average list price last year was over $2 million. Over the years, we have always focused on doing the highest level of marketing for our listings, providing our customers the highest level of service, and always putting their needs first. My son Matt joined our team this year, and I look forward to passing our business on to him and potentially our daughter someday if real estate interests her.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
My love for Central Florida is boundless, and I’m thrilled to witness the exponential growth we’ve experienced in the past decade. It’s a vibrant place to live, offering a plethora of exciting activities. Our central location provides easy access to beaches and other areas in Florida. However, I do acknowledge that the infrastructure, such as roads and schools, needs to keep pace with our rapid growth.
