Hi Tabia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey with Taboo Denim began from personal struggles as a teen. I experienced the frustration of constantly finding jeans that were too short and uncomfortable. Seeing a lack of options for women like me who needed longer inseams, I decided to take matters into my own hands. This led me to create Taboo Denim to increase accessibility and cater to those with unique sizing needs. However, launching the line during the COVID-19 pandemic presented significant challenges. The closure of factories in China due to the pandemic disrupted production timelines, causing delays and added stress. Balancing the demands of starting a business with personal family matters and the rigors of graduate school made the journey even more daunting. Despite these obstacles, I navigated the difficulties through perseverance and resilience, learning valuable lessons and emerging stronger.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road could have been smoother. Financing the business out of my pocket has been a significant struggle, adding financial strain and uncertainty to the journey. Additionally, battling imposter syndrome has been challenging, often making me doubt my abilities and decisions. Despite partnering with Nordstrom, the experience was less fulfilling than I had hoped, leaving me feeling isolated and overwhelmed. Many tears were shed as I grappled with navigating these challenges independently, but each obstacle has been a learning opportunity, shaping me into a more resilient entrepreneur.

At Taboo Denim, I specialize in creating denim jeans that cater to individuals with unique sizing needs, particularly those requiring longer inseams. Our mission is to increase accessibility and provide comfortable, stylish denim for all body types. Our dedication to inclusivity and innovation in denim design sets us apart. We take pride in offering a range of sizes and styles to suit diverse preferences, ensuring that everyone can find their perfect fit. I’m most proud of our ability to overcome challenges and persevere because it is very easy to give up.

Honestly, no. I thrive off of the advice and principles my parents instilled in me. Their guidance has been my compass, shaping my approach to both work and life. While I appreciate the wealth of resources available, I find comfort and strength in the wisdom passed down through generations.
