Inspiring Conversations with Heather Dartez of Heather Dartez Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Dartez

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am an award-winning watercolor and acrylic artist, educator, and entrepreneur in Orlando, Florida. Growing up in Clewiston, a small South Florida town surrounded by sugarcane fields, I spent most of my time drawing, painting, and envisioning my future.

My journey took an unexpected turn after moving to Orlando to pursue an Arts degree at the University of Central Florida. After two years of art classes, I transitioned my major to align with a career in marketing, accepting a job offer in the field. Throughout college, I worked diligently, ultimately earning a Master’s in Business Administration. In 2008, I joined Full Sail University as a marketing instructor and now proudly serve as the Director of Graduate Studies.

Despite my professional success in marketing, my passion for fine art never waned. Watercolor painting became my daily refuge, allowing me to explore creativity beyond the confines of business. Over the years, my dedication to the craft has garnered recognition from esteemed art organizations like the Florida Watercolor Society and Central Florida Watercolor Society, along with various art festivals and exhibitions.

My artistic journey has led to commissioned works for interior designers, corporations, and private clients. Moreover, I’ve pursued higher education, earning a Doctorate in Business Administration from California Southern University. My research focused on the intersection of art and commerce, particularly exploring monetization strategies for artists.

Nowadays, I take great joy in sharing my knowledge and experiences with fellow artists, leveraging my academic background and practical insights to empower others in their artistic endeavors. Beyond the canvas and classroom, I cherish travel moments, live music, and quality time with my husband and two boys.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As an artist, navigating the path to success sometimes feels like a delicate dance between passion and practicality. Balancing the demands of creative expression with the realities of needing to make money can be daunting. As an art student in college, I had many insecurities, eventually pushing me in a different direction. Every step forward can seem fraught with uncertainty. I knew I needed to learn more about business to succeed. I wasn’t going to let that stop me. I knew the only way to bridge the gap was to gain the skills to find success selling anything, including my art. Through perseverance, adaptability, and resilience, I confronted these obstacles head-on, forging my path in pursuit of artistic fulfillment and helping other artists find success doing what they love and sharing their art with the world.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I create art, but I also impart my knowledge and expertise to fellow artists of all kinds eager to elevate their craft and cultivate a thriving business. Through personalized workshops and training, my web series, and one-on-one coaching sessions, I empower aspiring creatives with the tools and strategies to effectively market their visual art, music, and more and build a sustainable business. My studio is where the creative pursuits happen, available as both original pieces and high-quality prints, as well as an array of curated products adorned with my unique artwork.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
First and foremost, never give up, stay motivated, and be determined. You can accomplish anything with grit and the right attitude. But in addition to that, it’s important to remember to have self-confidence and to believe you can achieve your goals. There is more than one way to get to a destination, and my path in life is a great example. I didn’t let my dreams of being an artist die. Getting here has taken me a long way. Still, every experience and step was meant to give me the skills to thrive artistically and professionally and, most importantly, help others.
