Today we’d like to introduce you to Mickaya Aiken
Hi Mickaya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
To begin with, my name is Mickaya and the name of my business is called Kaysthetics. The name of my business comes from the second half of my name and half from the word “esthetician”, with a twist to it! My junior year of high school , I spent half of the day at a technical college studying for cosmetology. Believe it or not, this is something that I never imagined would be one of my passions. I decided that I wanted to try/learn new things and I was blessed to be offered a placement seat in a classroom of no more than 15 students. At the end of the school year, I graduated in June of 2021. Shortly after, I wanted to put all my new skills to use so I decided to open a business where I could have the opportunity to help people the best I can. Kaysthetics was opened in May of 2021 and business went up almost immediately. I received so much love and support and that motivated to keep going. Now its 3 years later and i’m still growing strong; my products have been shipped to 3 other states , i’ve participated in 4 pop-up shops and i’m revamping my products every chance I get!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When you’re an entrepreneur, it’s never a smooth road. You have times where you want to give up or times where you would rather be sleep but the best part about it all is that, hard times pay off. My business is 45% skincare and 55% creativity so it gets frustrating sometimes when I can’t come up with new ways to market my products, it’s just like when a writer gets writers block. Being an entrepreneur is best described as a rollercoaster because all in all it is fun! I love making content, I love seeing my products working for my customers, I love seeing something I created grow each and every day.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am certified esthetician, meaning I am licensed in cosmetology and skin care. So I usually like to do my research on products and ingredients before I start creating new products for the market to try. A normal day in my business, is usually planned out. When you’re organized, you get more tasks done and it ensures that you complete everything. My main focus is of course creating the product for my customers but it’s also creating content which is usually my favorite part! All of my products are make-to-order because all ingredients are natural and fresh, which sets me apart from other skin care companies because I don’t use artificial ingredients. I am known for creating products that help target a customers skin issue. I’m most proud of this because you can hear the relieve in the customers voice when they tell me how well my products are working for them. My top sellers are: Body Butters, Bar Soaps and Moisturizing Oils.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My cosmetology teacher, Ms. Raquel , deserves some credit because she motivated me to open up Kaysthetics. She helped me create business cards and she even created my first photo box (it was just a black box with a light switch in it , that I could put my products in and take decent pictures lol!) The second shoutout goes to my cousin, Jinnelle, she created the first design of my logo and also took my 1 year Anniversary pictures for Kaysthetics! And last but not least my family! My mom, sister and brother encouraged me to keep going, they supported every decision I made, they were there at every pop-up shop and even helped me market my products! I am forever thankful for them because originally Kaysthetics was just a thought in my head but because of them my dream turned into my reality!
