Meet Jose Estevez of Fototato Photography

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Jose Estevez.

Hi Jose, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 2008, I resided in Beijing, China, where I pursued my studies while indulging in photography as a hobby. Over time, my passion for photography transitioned into a professional endeavor, allowing me to generate income from my craft. Upon returning to Venezuela in 2011, I continued to balance my roles as an engineer and photographer.

As Venezuela’s economic and political landscape deteriorated, prompting individuals to seek alternative means of survival, I decided to leave my position as a university professor and focus solely on photography. Establishing my own studio marked the beginning of this new chapter.

However, as the country’s situation worsened and sourcing photography equipment became increasingly challenging, I contemplated relocating to the United States. Through the support of individuals familiar with my work back in Venezuela, opportunities began to emerge in the United States.

Subsequently, I have had the privilege of working at prestigious events such as New York Fashion Week, Doral Fashion Week (Miami), and Miss Mundo Latina and collaborating with numerous models, capturing weddings, parties, and music concerts.

This brief narrative encapsulates my journey in the realm of photography.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The urgency to survive amid the challenges of my homeland, where the specter of death has loomed large over my family and friends, has not only shaped my perspective but also served as a poignant reminder of life’s brevity.

Witnessing the fragility of existence firsthand has instilled in me a profound understanding: one that emphasizes the importance of cherishing each moment and finding fulfillment in all that we do. This sobering realization compelled me to reassess my priorities and reevaluate the trajectory of my own life journey.

In light of these experiences, I made a conscious decision to pivot towards a path illuminated by passion and purpose. No longer content with simply existing or succumbing to societal expectations, I embarked on a quest to discover and nurture the endeavors that truly ignite my spirit.

By embracing work that aligns with my deepest aspirations and values, I not only seek personal fulfillment but also strive to make a meaningful contribution to the world around me. This shift towards authentic self-expression and genuine happiness signifies a transformative step towards a more fulfilling and purpose-driven existence.

As I bid farewell to the confines of merely working for the benefit of others, I embrace an empowering sense of autonomy and self-determination. Choosing to prioritize my own well-being and pursue endeavors that bring me joy, I embark on a journey marked by newfound freedom and authenticity.

This transition symbolizes more than a career change; it embodies a shift towards living an enriched life guided by passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to honoring my true self.
