Conversations with Tomas Perez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomas Perez.

Hi Tomas, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story began when I was around 12 years old when I would love to go out and watch my uncle’s flag football games on the weekends. After years of going, one day, someone needed a camera guy. I said to myself, “Since I love watching the games, I might as well get paid for it.” After a summer of recording games, the following year I was hired to do the same thing, although this time, I was to edit the video and post it for the guy who hired me. After countless hours of teaching myself how to import, export, edit, and layer music on the clips I shot, I got the hang of it.

After I got the hang of this summer job, flag football teams that played year-round would hire me to film practices and games they had. It was a nice side hustle I had that I did on my own. This is when I knew I wanted a career in video. I did that for a couple of years and then I got caught up in the food and beverage industry, which pretty much consumed my time on weekends, and I was unable to record games anymore. I graduated Valencia Community College with my AA degree and direct connected to UCF to pursue a degree in film. After leaving my management position in the restaurant industry, I asked myself, “What’s next?” I missed doing my own thing with recording and I said to myself, “Drone work.” Everyone appreciated some aerial photos and videos and it is a relatively new area of the market. I researched into getting a drone, studied and passed the FAA’s Part 107 License test (you need this to make money with a drone.) and began to market myself. This is where I am now today, looking for people who need drone work!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So and so, I needed to find my passion and study vigorously to get my aviation license. Now I must market myself, which is difficult for anyone or any business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently am taking photos and videos for my girlfriend’s food account on Instagram that has gained 1000 followers in four months. I also like to take drone shots for my Instagram and I do currently work for two realtors as they hire me for drone services. I am known for my creative content in film making, whether its with my drone or my Canon camera. My attitude and awareness, along with my journey to strive to be better, is what sets me apart from others.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is seeing other people be happy. It’s a strength and weakness of mine. I want to see the people around me have a good time which sometimes blurs my vision of my happiness. I just genuinely want everyone to enjoy themselves and experience zero negativity. There is too much of it in the world already.
