Daily Inspiration: Meet Michelle Unzué

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Unzué

Hi Michelle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a Spanish journalist specialized in creating written content and I love writing, I have been able to do it in different countries like China and Denmark and now I am very happy to continue doing it from Orlando. I arrived a year ago with my family (my husband and my two daughters) due to a work project of my husband, and for a few months I was working remotely for my Spanish company in the corporate communications department.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is always difficult to adapt to a new country or a new culture without having your family and friends close by. But there lies part of the charm, being able to see the positive and make the most of the experience. I have lived in several countries and from all of them I take good friends with me, it is one of the parts I like the most. And so far the experience in Orlando is being very enriching, my daughters have adapted very well at school and we are enjoying this beautiful opportunity. What I am finding more complicated is adapting to the medical insurance, because in Spain we have universal health care and the system is much simpler and more accessible than here.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Orlando is a city that has surprised me a lot in a good way. It has a lot of nature, tons of animals, there are many plans and a lot of cultural offerings. I saw that there was a huge amount of information in English but very little focused on a Spanish and Latino audience, and that’s why I decided to create a website in Spanish when I finished my contract with my company in Spain. Since February I share in ‘Qué ver en Orlando’ (‘What to see in Orlando’ ) what I research and discover, with the idea that it is useful information for the reader: places to go, restaurants, entertainment options, cultural articles…. I also find it very interesting to know the city through the eyes of the people who live there, that’s why I also have an Interviews section. And there is also an Accommodation section, although I haven’t used it yet. I am open to any kind of sponsor who wants to advertise on the web!

What makes me different from other similar websites?

First of all, there are hardly any websites with specific SEO about Orlando in Spanish. I have many years of experience as a journalist and my articles are very well written, with contrasted information. I would be very excited to gradually position as a quality website with useful information for both Orlando residents and visitors to the city.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was quite introverted and loved to read, I could spend hours immersed in a book feeling like the protagonist of the story, and if I really liked it I would sometimes get up at night and continue reading in the bathroom on the sly. Going to the movies or eating candies was also high on my list! I was a very quiet child and loved learning in school.
As a teenager I became much more sociable and loved going out with my friends, dancing… And my love for reading led to my love for writing, and that’s why I ended up studying Journalism at the University of Navarra, which is a very prestigious institution.

And how have you developed your profession?

When I finished my degree I had the good fortune to be able to work for a year in the Dominican Republic, in a multimedia company where I worked in television and wrote for the magazines of that publishing group. Then I worked in magazines and in the main newspaper of my city, Pamplona, specializing in cultural issues. Then, because of my husband’s job, we went to live in China for two years and it was an incredible experience, full of contrasts. There I started a blog where I wrote about all the shocking things in the country, and I also worked in the Spanish channel of the Chinese television. When I returned to Pamplona I started a very nice stage in a corporate social responsibility project and became the mother of two incredible girls. Then I moved with my family to Denmark for three years, a wonderful place to watch your daughters grow up. There I also worked on different projects, such as a blog about Denmark and the creation and translation of content for a Danish design company.

After Denmark, you returned to Spain?

That’s right. We spent two years in Pamplona, where I learned a lot about corporate communication in an international consulting firm, and again the opportunity arose to move to another country, in this case the United States. So we have been here for a year now and we are very happy to be getting to know the American culture little by little.
