Today we’d like to introduce you to Jo Richardson
Hi Jo, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, English, English Lit, Composition, you name it, they were consistently my favorite subjects. I loved reading stories that would take me out of real life for a while and let me live in a place where magical things happened. Metaphorically and literally speaking. I dabbled in poetry and short stories for school and loved it. As I got older, some stories seemed to fall short for me when they ended. So I scoured the internet for like minded beings and found the wonderful world of fanfiction – I also found, that was a way for me to “make it right” for some of those stories I mentioned, in my mind. The satisfaction of creating something with a beginning, middle, and end that made people happy is indescribable and unexpected – especially when you think you’re simply writing something for your own sanity. The positive feedback I received, kept me going. And going. Until one day I realized, what I wrote felt more like my own stories, in someone else’s world. So, one day, far beyond that, I published my first novel and put it out into the world and never looked back (except on occasion).
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road. If it had been, I would be skeptical. The biggest struggles I deal with are time, self doubt, fear of the unknown. But being able to have an outlet that allows me to create worlds I’d like to see out there overcomes all of that, eventually. It’s such a rewarding feeling to be able to do put something I’ve written into the world and then see people purchasing it, reading it, loving it (or hating it), and letting me know. That’s the best part.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
More about my work.
Well, it’s randomly thinking a single thought, on any given day, and then following the path that thought takes me on, until it’s a journey through a very specific moment in someone’s life. Then I add in the something that I think touches every part of everyone’s life. Which is what I specialize in…
Love.
Because romance is so much more than what some may want to box it in as – it’s messy, and scary, and NOT easy. Ever. And that’s I what I enjoy most about it.
I think what sets me apart is that I don’t ever hold myself to any one recipe for romance. Because there are so many factors in this thing called love that I couldn’t possibly explore them all in one lifetime. So I tell stories with broken people, broody people, funny people, smart people, flawed people… who murder, lie, steal, cheat the system, make bad decisions and end up in worse situations, along with all the other complicated situations that exist… all while simultaneously showing a side of someone who deserves love.
And I am most proud of the fact that I’ve encouraged my girls to explore their creative sides as well. It’s been so much fun watching them go through their lives keeping their creativity – whatever it may be – as part of who they are.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
That’s a deceiving word, luck. I’m not sure how much it’s played a role in anything I’ve written or done in life. I just follow the path. And quite honestly, I make all efforts to try not to dwell on it. Instead I like to focus on the positives that have happened in my life, like the great guy I married and the two awesome human beings we’ve raised. The friends I have in my life. The roof over my head. I’m pretty content.
