Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Litz
Hi Anne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After working in a corporate setting for many years, I was ready to take the leap into business ownership. My business partner (who is also my son) was at a career crossroads and looking for a new opportunity. We had been researching various franchises and came across SugaringNYC by chance. Sugaring NYC was fairly new to franchising, but had a business model that was attractive to us as first-time business owners.
We opened our first SugaringNYC studio in Winter Springs on September 5, 2023 and are doing great! Our second location will be opening in Tampa late October 2024.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Opening a business is rarely a smooth road. As entrepreneurs we faced a variety of challenges, especially in the early stages. Some of the hurdles we encountered were:
– Financial strain – managing cash flow and dealing with unexpected expenses and slower than expected revenue created financial pressure.
– Construction and permitting – due to Covid, construction took longer than expected and we hit a few roadblocks with changing county regulations.
– Hiring and managing staff – finding the right people who share your vision and building a strong team is crucial. There is also the need to balance leadership and management responsibilities.
– Work-life balance – the time commitment is intense, especially in the beginning. We struggled at times to maintain a healthy balance.
Despite the challenges, it has been a rewarding – both personally and financially.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Anne:
I have a background in both engineering and business with extensive experience in the defense industry. These transferable skills gave me a strong foundation for running a business. For example, engineering taught me to approach problems logically and methodically. These problem solving skills are invaluable when facing operational challenges or troubleshooting issues. My business education gives me a strong understanding of financial management, market dynamics and strategy allowing me to make informed decisions regarding budgeting and growth opportunities. Having worked in a very structured environment honed my leadership and teamwork skills, taught me how to manage different stakeholders and build effective partnerships.
Ryan:
Having worked as an automotive technician for a large dealership provided me with skills in customer service. Interacting with clients regularly built strong communication which is key to retaining customers and building a position relationship. Working to tight deadlines taught me how to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively and managing parts and tools helps me understand inventory management, budgeting and cost control. These skills are invaluable in running a service business irrespective of the industry.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Our main advice is to really understand your local customers and create a strong brand that stands out. Make sure your services meet their needs and focus on providing a great experience so they keep coming back. Networking with other local businesses can help you gain customers through referrals, and staying updated on industry trends will keep you competitive. It’s also important to have enough working capital to cover your expenses, especially in the early days.
