Today we’d like to introduce you to Catelyn Richard.
Hi Catelyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Photography was never a thing for me outside of snapping a few photos of pretty views I saw on family vacations or the occasional food photo of the meal I was about to devour. The only reason I had even purchased my own camera was because I had decided to study abroad in Italy one summer during college. I was a science major, but I didn’t feel like signing up for any science classes. I was in Italy! Who takes science classes that you actually have to study for in Italy???
So I found the easiest classes I could and signed up for them. Those classes happened to be Digital Photography and Travel Photography and they both required me to have a DSLR camera to take them. So I went on eBay, bought a brand new camera, and I haven’t been able to put it down since. When I got back from Italy, I continued photography as a hobby, but it has since grown into a business that I love. My camera has allowed me to travel to new countries, to win money, to have my name in magazines and in the Orlando International Airport, and to make connections with so many dope creatives. It has been over three years now since I took those photography classes in Italy, but it’s still crazy to me to think that in trying to take the easy way out, I found my passion.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not exactly. I go through these periods and every artist can relate to this- where I feel a lack of motivation to create. Or where I just don’t feel creative enough. During those times, it helps me a lot to find inspiration in other artist’s work. Additionally, COVID-19 has affected the amount of people I was able to work with this year. It’s been a slow year for my business, but next year will be better.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m known for my photography. I have a photography business that I like to call Catelyn Richard Photography -creative, I know! I shoot all kinds of things, but my specialties are fashion, editorials, portraits & weddings. I also shoot my own creative projects that have been showcased at art shows, published in magazines, winners in contests, etc. I currently have a piece up in the Orlando International Airport that’s been there since the 1st of October and will be there into the new year. Just a few months ago, I won a few hundred dollars in a contest for one of my creative pieces that I conceptualized and shot. I truly believe that it is my unique eye and editing style that sets me apart from all other photographers.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me most is that my art inspires every individual who comes across it to be more creative and purposeful and emotional and outgoing and versatile because that would mean that my art has a bigger purpose other than to quench my creative thirst.
