Daily Inspiration: Meet Jay Derosier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Derosier

Hi Jay, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, to be utterly honest, I grew up in NYC listening to HOT97 with talents like Funk Master Flex, Angie Martinez, Miss Info, Fatman Scoop, Star & Buckwild as the voices of my childhood in a world where I was trying to find my place. Listening to them, I fell in love with broadcasting. As the internet grew, you had personalities like Big Boy, Ebro, Charlamagne Tha God, and others grow and dominate a space that was once only occupied by others who didn’t look like us.

With them as my inspiration, I started my podcast/media career in 2018 with a podcast called “The Purgatory Podcast” (I know, not the greatest name). The focus was to give independent artists their first interviews to help them grow a following. However, it didn’t turn out well due to multiple factors: artists not showing up for interviews, studios having technical difficulties, and life happening as well. I had a child and was also diagnosed with cancer in 2020 during Covid. So I had to put my dreams of being a media professional on the back burner for a few years.

I ended up getting a great job in retail as a manager but was let go 3-4 years later due to a mistake I made. Now in 2024, I’ve decided that I need to do what I’m passionate about and what I love most. With “Serious Sarcasm Podcast” being the anchor of the “Jay Derosier Media Network” and being able to run a business that showcases my talent and passion, I can achieve my goals and aspirations to make a true difference in this space that has become so toxic for all involved.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Plenty of struggles – whether it be time, whether it be expenses, or whether it just be depending on others to hold up their end of the deal. Things just didn’t turn out well. However, looking back at all these things, I’ve reached a space spiritually and professionally where I know how to maneuver and take advantage of certain situations for the business’s benefit. All whilst having fun!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
With owning “Jay Derosier Media Network,” we are producing shows and skits to entertain the masses, starting with our first podcast, “Serious Sarcasm Podcast,” as our anchor. We are launching a new podcast in December 2024 called “The Fupas & Flapjacks Podcast,” where myself and Tre Hale will be speaking on dating, body positivity, and mental wellbeing as Black men while using our new platform to uplift Black women. As we grow, we plan on adding a music show where we can give lesser-known artists of all genres a space to get their first online interview. So far, my proudest moment was reaching 100 listeners. It lets me know that people are actually listening to the show.

The main thing that sets me apart from others is my true passion for this medium. I already spoke about the inspirations I’ve listened to growing up, but now as a 31-year-old father of one, I see podcasting losing its luster because people just use it as a way to tear down others instead of uplifting and holding each other accountable. As corny and cliché as it may seem, I believe I’m the vaccine that this space needs to exist and push the narrative toward a place of truth and love.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Orlando because it’s the one city in the USA that can be Miami in some areas, LA-ish in others , but still has blend of some many cultures. Literally you can always find something to do in this tourist capital.

Only dislike…. I-4.. Nuff’ Said!!!
