Rising Stars: Meet Felicia Adderley of Nassau, Bahamas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Felicia Adderley

Hi Felicia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The interesting thing about life is that while we are living, it’s an unfinished story. None of us knows how the story ends, or even what’s in the next chapter. Every day is a blank page and in some ways, we are each the author of our own story. My story started as an inquisitive girl that loved reading, writing and making things. Although I was an academic, I enjoyed learning new skills, doing crafts and even sketching clothing designs and sewing. I can see now how I am going back to that creative side of myself.

Since I was 15, I dreamt of owning my own physical therapy practice and after several detours I was able to do so by the age of 32. Fast forward several years, 1 pandemic and a recession later and here comes Posh Parties! Somewhere in the middle of a mess, I started this new business. It was totally unexpected, yet still full circle for me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some parts of the journey have been smooth, but others have been quite bumpy. A few years of tranquility are often followed by years of strife. It’s like a cycle, but I suppose it’s to be expected. There have been so many challenges that I often find myself thinking that life is a fight. I had to leave graduate school in the United States to return home to the Bahamas to work for 4 years. It was a fight to get back to school to complete my doctoral degree (a fight I almost lost!). I made it through though. Then after returning home and opening my practice, the pandemic hit and with that a whole slew of issues. It was yet another fight, one that I seemingly lost as I closed the doors of that practice after 7 years. You just never know which way life’s road will take a twist. The best thing is to keep going until you find out where the road leads, even when you are unsure.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What sets me apart is that, I do that thing that people least expect and that others don’t have the courage or confidence to do. People didn’t expect me to make a switch in business or the industry I was in. Generally in my country, the “old way” of thinking is to do one thing until you one day retire at an old age or die in the role. If you have one of the more coveted professions- doctor, lawyer, accountant, etc, then you have “made it”. My manner of thinking is different than most. Being happy and fulfilled is just as imp0rtant as making a good living to make a comfortable life for myself.

Now what sets Posh Parties apart from the pack is that we provide an experience to delight the senses of guests at events and special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, graduations, grand openings, wedding and baby showers. It’s our mission to bring the client’s dreamworld to life. We are currently best known for our marquee number and letter set ups and our unique stuffed balloon gifts.

Every week clients rave about the excellent customer service, seamless process and high level of professionalism they receive. They seem truly impressed and it let’s me know I am doing something right. I am proud of the quality of work that we provide to the client and the vast options for balloon decor they can choose from- we have quite the range. We also ensure that no 2 designs are exactly the same and that we bring a fresh element every time. If lightening doesn’t strike the same place twice, then Posh Parties doesn’t strike the same WAY twice.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Starting a business is a risk! Anyone that wants to own a business MUST have an appetite for risk. A few weeks ago, I had this thought that “Entrepreneurship is about jumping in, even when you’re not sure you can swim.”

Another risky situation is investments. They are necessary so your money is working for you instead of just you working for it. They don’t all always work out of course because different types of investments carry different levels of risk.

The bottom-line is that if you want to win big you have to play big/take risks. Sometimes playing big can lead to big losses, but I say, play big anyway. A safe life is boring!
