Rising Stars: Meet Feb of Saint Petersburg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Feb

Hi Feb, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been drawn to singing and writing. I would jot down ideas I had for lyrics and stuff but I never thought I’d be the person producing my own songs until I got to high school. This was when I started thinking about actually doing music as a career, like, seriously haha. I was in a music production program for four years there and I got to meet and collaborate with a bunch of eccentric people throughout my time there. It was fun y’know? Making beats, talking with other creatives, honing our skills together and we even did a showcase too. I have this one specific memory where I was on a call with some friends at the time and they tried to get me to freestyle? I stopped like 3 bars in though because I was like “this is trash” but it was still fun.

After my time there, I enrolled in a 2 year music production class in college. I forgot a majority of the things I learned in high school so I needed a refresher and I wanted to release music so I went to a program there. While I was there, I was releasing under a different name but I changed it to “Feb The Lover”. I’m a February baby and I was supposed to be born on Valentine’s Day which is like y’know, lovey-dovey lovers party day! The name was more personal to me. I also liked that the concept of what a lover even is, can be expanded on. So because of all of that, “Feb The Lover” just stuck. Plus I get to refer to people that support me as “Lovers” which is fun for me to say because I like wordplay haha. Like fans? I don’t have those. I have “Lovers”. My “Lovers” are like *the* Lovers and hopefully just a Lover of everything really.

Since becoming Feb, I’ve played two festivals in 2024 and I’m working on building my community of Lovers too! I also released a single on the 11th! It’s called “With Love” and it’s available on most major streaming platforms!

But yeah, that’s where I’m currently at in my career!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh of course there have been struggles along the way. My family wasn’t financially well-off. I was bouncing from job to job since 16 for various reasons. I had to make sure my sister and I had phone services growing up, y’know. Somehow, I managed to save some money and turn my bedroom into a home studio!

Aside from financial stuff, I’ve had to deal with some very… interesting characters. The regular music industry stuff that you hear, y’know?

People who hated their voice telling me that I couldn’t sing, people trying to take advantage of me because they didn’t want to pay someone else, people treating me not as an equal but as just a groupie because I liked their stuff, seeing people I called my friends support everyone else loudly and proudly but were silent when it came to me and so much more.

The chatter from folks that couldn’t deal with themselves was something I struggled with as well at first. That kind of stuff takes a toll on someone if it goes on for a while, y’know? It gets you to start believing the external voices and listening to them while suppressing your own. Luckily I realized that some people didn’t have good intentions for me. Their “critiques” weren’t coming from wanting to see me succeed, just wanting someone to project their self-hatred onto. I cut those voices off a long time ago but I hope they’re doing better now.

I’m in a better place mentally though and my skills have improved since then because I’ve grown more confident, which is great! But those are some of the struggles I’ve gone through along the way!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an independent music artist and producer that specializes in genre fusion, but I like to call it “painting sonic landscapes”. It sounds a lot more interesting than me saying I sit at my computer in my room demurely and make beats all day, haha.

At this moment in time, I’m most known for my first single “Villain”. It’s a moody, alternative Pop/R&B track influenced by EDM that is essentially about reclaiming the term after having it weaponized against you by someone who actually embodies the negative connotations that the word holds. It’s the first track I released as Feb, first track I’ve ever released that got to over 10k streams on multiple platforms after releasing singles sporadically under different names for years and it’s the first track that introduced people to me!

Aside from that single, I’m most proud of the tenacity I’ve always had. I don’t know who I inherited that from but looking back, it seems like no matter how hard things were for me, I kept going. Because of that specific trait, I’m here and I’m existing as Feb. My single “With Love” is out on all platforms now so I know that I’ll definitely still be existing as Feb for a while.

To be honest with you though, I’m not too sure what sets me apart from others because I’ve never really liked the concept of comparisons and typically folks put their peers down to prop themselves up in order to answer questions of a similar nature. That’s just not my kind of thing. Plus I’m early in my career so it’s not easy to define as everything I wish to say has yet to be revealed.

However, I will say that I do possess the courage to be vulnerable, communicative and myself in front of others when it comes to expressing how I perceive everything as I navigate the world. In a world that shuts folks down for being so, I think that’s something that we need more of in order to normalize that! It comes across on my social media platforms, in my music, and there will definitely be more of that in the future since I have complete creative control of my work and I plan on keeping it that way. So if that piques your interest, congrats on finding me!

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I think the concept of what matters most to people is bound to shift and change as time goes on.

As of right now, what matters most to me is balancing myself and community. With how things have been looking in the world for quite some time now, what we all need is each other to hold out. If everyone is always looking out for just themselves, who’s going to be there for you when your world comes crashing down?

With that being said, this is where the act of balancing comes in. I’m in a community building phase yes but I’m also in a phase of getting to know the world and myself as a young adult. I’ve come to the realization that helping others and being there for others is rough when you’re struggling to do those things for yourself, especially at at the building phase of such a public career path. That’s kind of where I’m at as a smaller indie artist and as a young adult really. That and also the world, is a lot to figure out all at once when you’re like, not even 23 haha but that’s why balance is so necessary.

It matters to me because I want a sustainable future for myself and others. Basically, a better world. A liberated one. One that’s more sustainable, focused on camaraderie and is actually people-oriented, y’know? A world where caring and taking action from that kind of space becomes the norm. We have pockets of that globally but it’s not the most mainstream thing, yet. I’m okay if it I don’t get to witness it in this lifetime because I know it’s a long time coming. There’s a lot of deconstruction of current societal norms & systems that needs to be done by everyone in order for that to world to fully come to fruition. That doesn’t mean it matters any less to me though.
