Today we’d like to introduce you to Deyaneira Agarwal.
Hi Deyaneira, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Boho Macian’s story began in the vibrant, narrow streets of Jaipur, India; a place where color, culture, and creativity flow at every corner. It was here that my boyfriend at the time (now my husband) excitedly showed me the array of intricate, handmade trinkets that lined the markets. While I was completely enchanted by the beautiful ornaments, my attention quickly shifted to the talented artisans behind them. I wanted to understand who they were, how they worked, and the stories behind these magical pieces. After some research and conversations with local vendors, we were able to track down these gifted creators. But what we discovered was not quite what I had imagined.
Though these artisans possessed extraordinary talent, they were working under poor conditions, with contracts that were often exploitative and unfair. Speaking directly with them, I felt a deep sense of responsibility, not only to bring their creations to a wider audience but also to ensure they were compensated fairly for their craft. This realization became the driving force behind Boho Macian: a brand that not only showcases these beautiful products, but also champions ethical practices, ensuring that the artists receive a meaningful portion of the profits they deserve.
As someone who is deeply passionate about sustainability, I knew I wanted to create a brand that merged my love for fashion with my commitment to protecting the environment. The fashion industry’s impact on the planet, particularly its reliance on low-quality, non-sustainable materials, was a growing concern for me. With Boho Macian, we’ve made it a priority to use eco-friendly, vegan materials and ethical production methods. Our goal is to offer our customers the opportunity to make more conscious choices when it comes to their wardrobes, all while supporting a business that stands for something larger than just style.
What began with hand-painted earrings has grown into something far greater. Today, Boho Macian has expanded to over 80 unique designs, from bags and tops to pants, dresses, matching sets, and jumpsuits. And we’re not stopping there. Our latest offering includes traditionally handcrafted cushion covers, showcasing the intricate Indian techniques of block printing and embroidery. Each piece reflects the artistry and skill of the incredible artisans we work with, continuing our mission to support their craft and tell their stories on a global stage.
This journey is not just about fashion; it’s about empowerment, sustainability, and respect for the art and culture that inspire us every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
To say that our journey has been a smooth ride would be an understatement, though it hasn’t been without its fair share of challenges either. Like any new venture, we’ve encountered some obstacles but we believe the most important thing is to keep going in the face of any struggle. We never expect an easy path, especially when entering an industry with as many barriers as fashion. From navigating the complexities of finding the right vending spots to securing reliable retailers and wholesalers, the journey hasn’t been simple. Yet, we remain committed to pushing forward, determined to get Boho Macian on the highest platforms possible.
Working with artisans from a completely different part of the world has certainly added its own set of challenges. The communication barriers, time zone differences, and issues with things like stitching flaws, color discrepancies, and currency conversions have all presented difficulties. These obstacles would be easier to manage if our manufacturing process were closer to home, but we believe that the unique value of our brand lies in its global approach, and we’re willing to work through the complexities to maintain that authenticity.
One surprising aspect of our journey was the original name we had in mind for the brand. In the early months, we were set on calling it ‘Deya Vu’. However, when we went to register the company, we discovered that the name was already taken, not only by one but four different companies across various industries. Though I was initially attached to the name, we quickly realized it could create confusion for customers, so we made the difficult decision to move forward with a new one. Today, looking back, that moment feels like one of the best decisions we made. ‘Boho Macian’ not only reflects our values more closely but also resonates deeply with our customers and industry professionals alike. At the time, we didn’t know how well the name would fit, but now, it’s hard to imagine our brand as anything else.
Through every challenge, we’ve learned, adapted, grown and the journey has only made us more passionate about what we do. The evolution of Boho Macian is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of staying true to our vision.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At Boho Macian, we bring the rich craftsmanship of Indian artistry to the global stage, offering high-quality, beautifully hand-crafted pieces at a price point that is both fair and sustainable. Our mission goes beyond just creating beautiful fashion. We are deeply committed to ensuring that the artists and designers we collaborate with are compensated well. While building a model around this hasn’t been without its challenges, it’s something that fills us with immense pride, knowing that we’re doing our part to elevate both the craft and the people behind it.
What truly sets us apart in the marketplace is our commitment to offering high-quality, artisan-made fashion at an accessible price. Unlike many high-end brands that price their products out of reach for most consumers, we believe that luxury should not be exclusive. We want our designs to be available to a broader audience, not just a select few. We achieve this by owning the Indian side of our operations, which allows us to directly manage production and export, eliminating the middleman.
Another aspect we are particularly proud of is our commitment to sustainability. We specialize in cruelty-free and eco-friendly materials, including 100% organic cotton and vegan silk, which are often hard to find in the industry. These materials align with our values of environmental consciousness and ethical sourcing, further setting us apart from other brands. In essence, Boho Macian is about more than just fashion. It’s about creating a platform for artisan voices, championing sustainability, and offering beauty that’s accessible to all.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Two books that have profoundly shaped my life and the way I approach work at Boho Macian are You can heal your life by Louise Hay and The four agreements by Miguel Ruiz. These books have helped me approach life and business with significant clarity, resilience and intention.
You can heal your life has taught me the importance of self-belief and staying aligned with a positive mindset. This book has been a foundation to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and possibility, which deeply aligns with the values of Boho Macian; creating sustainable and bold fashion that inspires confidence and self expression.
The four agreements talks about four simple yet very powerful principles that guide how I navigate challenges and build relationships. These agreements have encouraged authenticity and integrity, which are also values that are showcased in every design and decision I make for Boho Macian.
Both books remind me to stay grounded, lead with intention, and trust in the journey; whether it’s in creating meaningful designs or managing the day to day of running a small business.
