Conversations with Derek Nelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Nelson

Hi Derek, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Photography has always been more than a job for me—it’s a way to tell stories, capture emotions, and preserve memories that people can cherish forever. My journey with the camera started when I was young, growing up in New York. I first picked up a camera back then, fascinated by how it could freeze a moment in time. Life pulled me in other directions for a while, and I didn’t truly return to photography until 2015. That year reignited my passion, and it marked the beginning of Derek Marc Photography as a professional venture.

When I started this business over Ten years ago, it was just me, a camera, and a dream. I wanted to create something meaningful, something that would allow me to combine my love for art and my desire to connect with people.

In the beginning, I took on small projects, often for friends and family, just to learn and grow. Over time, those small projects turned into bigger opportunities, and I found myself diving deeper into not just photography, but also videography and video editing. It wasn’t always easy—there were challenges and sacrifices along the way—but I stayed committed to delivering my best work to every client.

What drives me most is seeing the joy on someone’s face when they see the final product—a captured moment, a story told, a vision brought to life. That’s what keeps me going, and it’s what makes this journey so rewarding. Today, I’m proud to serve the Greater Orlando area, continuing to grow and create art that speaks to the heart.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but my faith has been a guiding light through the challenges. There have definitely been struggles along the way. When I first started, it was challenging to build my portfolio and attract clients. I had to take on smaller projects and often work for little or no pay just to gain experience and exposure. There were times when I questioned if I was on the right path, especially when things were slow. But my faith kept me grounded and reminded me that everything has its season.

As I expanded into videography and video editing, the learning curve grew steeper. There were technical issues and equipment failures that came up during shoots, and managing those under pressure was tough. I also had to navigate building a brand from the ground up, which required a lot of effort and persistence. Throughout these struggles, I leaned on God for strength and guidance, trusting that He had a plan for me even when things felt uncertain.

Despite these obstacles, each challenge helped me grow and develop my craft. My faith has played a huge role in helping me stay focused and motivated, knowing that each setback is a lesson and a step toward something greater. The road hasn’t always been easy, but I’m grateful for the journey and how it’s shaped me both as a person and as a creator. Through it all, I’ve learned to trust in God’s timing and direction, knowing that He’s been with me every step of the way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What I do is all about capturing the essence of a moment. As a photographer and videographer, I specialize in creating visual stories that resonate with people. My focus is on events, portraits, and personal milestones—those moments that hold deep meaning in people’s lives. I also provide video editing services that help bring these stories to life in a unique, creative way. Whether it’s a wedding, family gathering, or a professional business shoot, I take pride in capturing the emotions and details that make each experience special.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with many incredible models and filmmakers along the way, each contributing their unique perspective and talent. Collaborating with other creatives has expanded my skills and vision, giving me the opportunity to push my limits and grow as an artist. One of the most fun and rewarding aspects of my photography journey has been diving into the world of cosplay. The creativity and dedication that cosplayers put into their craft has been inspiring, and it’s been a true joy to capture these characters coming to life through my lens. These shoots have brought a different kind of energy and excitement, and I’m always amazed by the incredible stories told through the costumes, makeup, and performances.

I’m most proud of the connections I’ve made with my clients. It’s not just about taking photos or shooting video—it’s about telling a story that’s true to who they are. That’s what I strive to do in every project, no matter how big or small. I want people to look at the work I do and feel like it truly represents them, their emotions, and their journey.

What sets me apart is my genuine passion for the craft. It’s not just a job for me—it’s an opportunity to share in people’s most cherished moments and create something they can hold on to forever. I put my heart into every project and always aim for perfection, whether it’s the perfect shot, a perfectly edited video, or ensuring the final product exceeds expectations. My faith and commitment to delivering the best work I can also set me apart. I believe in treating every project with the care and respect it deserves, and I strive to reflect that in everything I do.

What makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is seeing the joy on people’s faces when they experience the final product of my work. Whether it’s a photograph that captures a beautiful moment or a video that tells a powerful story, knowing that I’ve helped preserve something meaningful for someone else brings me so much fulfillment. There’s something incredibly rewarding about knowing that I’ve been able to freeze a memory in time, allowing people to look back on it for years to come.

My faith also plays a huge role in my happiness. It gives me a sense of purpose and direction, knowing that I’m doing what I’m meant to do. When I’m in tune with my faith, everything falls into place. Being able to combine my passion for photography with my belief that I’m doing meaningful work gives me peace and joy.

Another thing that makes me happy is the creative process itself—the challenges, the learning, and the growth. I love how photography and videography allow me to constantly evolve as an artist. It’s exciting to push boundaries, try new techniques, and experiment with different styles.

And of course, my wife, Carmen, is a big part of what makes me happy. Her support, love, and encouragement keep me grounded and motivated every day. She’s been by my side through every challenge and victory, and having her in my life brings me so much joy and strength. It’s her unwavering belief in me that fuels my passion and drives me to continue growing both as an artist and a person.
