Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Gomez
Hi Genesis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for makeup started as a young girl watching my mom do her makeup as she would get ready for work, and by the time I was 8 I would spend my evenings binge watching Michelle Phan and Promise Tamang. I would spend hours trying to recreate their looks and watching music videos of our favorite video vixens and try to film my own “youtube” videos displaying my work and techniques inspired by these music videos. My recordings were never uploaded online until the age of 16. I started to upload quick snippets of my day to day makeup on Instagram and these uploads only increased my passion for makeup. At the age of 21 I decided to step in to do makeup for a friend’s music video they were shooting. Working on that music video only confirmed what I have always known, I want to be a makeup artist. I decided to build a kit and offer my services to loved ones to practice, safe to say each person loved the look I created which only built my confidence into where it is today. I offer many different services including full glam makeup, natural makeup, editorial makeup, and even makeup lessons. I still enjoy uploading videos of my makeup and myself, which helps me stay true to the origin of my passion.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building a business is all about learning from your own mistakes in order to grow. So far in my experience I haven’t encountered any roadblocks, just some bumps. For example, building my kit from my own pocket as a 21 year old college student was not easy but was absolutely necessary for me to make sacrifices for. Another struggle I have encountered is creating brand awareness which is what I am currently working on by learning social media strategies and tactics. I look forward to learning and growing along with my business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a young makeup artist, I love to specialize in makeup for film and music videos. So far, many of my great experiences have been on set along with local film students helping make their vision boards come to life for their productions. Production makeup aside, I am known for creating beautiful looks that enhance the natural beauty of the client sitting in my chair. Each one of my clients leaves my chair still feeling like themselves and feeling confident and beautiful. I’m most proud of listening to what my clients want, and making sure I accomplish just that. Makeup is art on a canvas that you display to every person you encounter. Your makeup will dictate how people remember their perception of you so it is important to make sure it not only looks not only good, but that it feels good. Nothing is worse than walking around feeling like ~not~ yourself. I am proud that my clients can come to me knowing that I will work with them to make their vision come to life.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking risks is the only way to guarantee success. Without taking risks, one will only remain stagnant in their growth which is the fear of many entrepreneurs including myself. Risks mean you can lose it all, which is a feeling of which no one likes. However, the chance you take of gaining what you envision and more makes taking the risks worth it. I have taken many risks in the beginning of Genesis Vanity, such as building a makeup kit from my own pocket as a young college student before having any booked clients. Without taking this risk, I would not have been ready for my first booking which was done the night before the event, The event I was booked for allowed for my next 3 bookings to arise, which was everything to me at the time and has continued to feed my business. This example is just one of many, and more to come!
Pricing:
- Bookings begin at $75
- One on one makeup lessons start at $120
