Today we’d like to introduce you to Francesca Plumly
Hi Francesca, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Funny enough, I started the draft of my first children’s book “Who Lives on Blooper Lane?” back in 2020, before I had kids. Perhaps I had a little too much coffee that day, and found myself on a creative kick one evening after work. I was living in New York City, and downtime seemed rare — I took a brief moment of quiet and decided to have a little fun with it. I had the random spark of an idea for an alphabet-led children’s book, leading readers through the daily happenings of animals living in suburbia… Doing as suburbanites would do, only, whackier. My professional background for the last 10+ years has been in marketing, with an emphasis on creative, branding, and writing. So, I’ve always had writing in my bones. I had previously written my own dog blog, fitness blog, and continually kept my writing alive both personally and professionally. Upon developing my first draft, I tucked the project under the rug and life got in the way. Flash forward to early 2024, now a mom to a toddler, I was reminded of this book draft I had put together. Except, now, I was a mother and could step back into this project under the “what would make my child laugh, smile, learn” lens. Eight months of editing, sourcing, and self-publishing… I’m now an author — a dream I’ve had since childhood.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No dream or passion is ever executed without a hitch. Life happens. Especially as a full-time working, and pregnant, mom. Days where you’re determined to get something done on your passion project turn into days you’re prepping for an unexpected storm – and as a mom, storms aren’t just weather-related here in Florida. Teething spells, blow-outs, sick days. Those all go underreported on the Weather Channel. I wish I could have gotten my book out in less than eight months, but looking back on the process, every day mattered. Lessons learned in the self-publishing process, focus groups with my own little family, occasional pep talks, mistakes made, etc. They all summed up to a journey I’d do 150 times over. I’ve already got plans for my next books!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m Francesca Plumly, a children’s book author with an emphasis on creating cognitive recall through my Blooper Lane book series. My first book “Who Lives on Blooper Lane?” is for infants to third graders. This book teaches ABCs, introduces 34 animals, encourages neighborly kindness, and takes kids along Blooper Lane — exploring how animals would take on suburban living.
Through the process of self-publishing this book, I’m proud of my endurance in getting this book to market. Too often, adulthood is the scary monster under the bed holding our passions and ideas hostage. I had always dreamt of making something, something you can hold, touch, and feel. This book has essentially earned its mark on my family tree — a piece of me that I’ve brought into this world. And to know that children around the world are reading my book. Well…. That’s everything and more to me.
What are your plans for the future?
I’d like to dedicate my next year to promoting this first book of mine, “Who Lives on Blooper Lane?” Then, I have plans to begin my next couple of books in the “Blooper Lane” series. There is so much fun to be had with animals living as humans would in every-day suburbia. As a self-published author, I have to be hands-on in getting this book across bookshelves everywhere. This is a process I’ve loved, especially with my background in marketing.
