Today we’d like to introduce you to Diji Brown
Hi Diji , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was a little girl in Kingston, Jamaica, I’ve been obsessed with makeup. I used to sneak into my aunt’s makeup bag, but my grandmother, a devout Seventh-day Adventist, wasn’t having it! When I visited my mom in the U.S. on school breaks, she let me play with her Bare Minerals and MAC products, and by the time I moved to the States at around 9 or 10, I was unstoppable. Trips to Claire’s and Justice turned into mini hauls of age-appropriate makeup, and I was glued to YouTube—uploading videos of myself doing makeup (you might still find one!) and watching influencers like Aaliyah Jay, Jackie Aina, and James Charles.
By 7th grade, I mastered my brows, and by 11th grade, I was rocking full faces to school, practicing on my mom, aunt, and friends. After graduating high school in 2020, my dad started a hair business for me, but selling hair wasn’t my thing. Makeup, though? Always my passion. One day, I was venting to a close friend about my dreams, and he said, “Just do it, Diji, you’re so indecisive. You got this.” When I told my dad, he replied, “Mi nah mek nuh more investment yuh deh pon yuh own wid dis one.”
With my friend’s push and a lot of determination, I built my business from the ground up. Now, at 22, I’m proud to say I’m a full-time makeup artist living my dream
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a makeup artist has its ups and downs. Some clients are amazing, while others can be difficult. Burnout happens, especially since I’m a full-time college student, but I remind myself that God put me here to follow my dreams, and He keeps showing me why I should keep going. The biggest challenge isn’t just gaining clients but maintaining them. Trends change, and staying on top of what’s new—and consistently posting content—is key to staying relevant.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a full-time freelance makeup artist specializing in all types of glam, though soft and sultry looks are my go-to since they’re so popular. That said, I love when clients bring creative ideas that push me out of my comfort zone—it’s exciting! Beyond makeup, I’m known for making my clients feel at home. Let’s be real, I’m in your face for over an hour, so I make it fun—like a girl chit-chat session where we talk about life, goals, and everything in between.
What I’m most proud of is my resilience in the beauty industry. It takes heart to work with women from all walks of life and enhance their beauty to their liking. I’ve also expanded my business, traveling not just across Florida but between Orlando and Atlanta, which feels like a big accomplishment.
What sets me apart is my transparency and relatability. I’ve built genuine relationships with my clients—many of them can call me anytime, and I’ll show up for them. Plus, I’m all about making sure my clients look their best, even capturing content on a professional camera that they love to see posted. It’s all about the experience!
How do you define success?
For me, success is about breaking barriers and creating opportunities where they didn’t exist before. As a 22-year-old immigrant and makeup artist, success isn’t just measured by financial gain or recognition—it’s about breaking generational curses and paving a new path for myself and my family. It’s being able to follow my passion, build a business from the ground up, and inspire others to chase their dreams, no matter where they come from or what challenges they face. Success is also about resilience—showing up every day, learning, growing, and knowing that I’m making a difference in the lives of my clients and in my own journey.
