Today we’d like to introduce you to Angely Callejas
Hi Angely, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I was very young. I was always surrounded by makeup because my mom worked for L’Oréal Colombia for as long as I can remember. I would always play with the makeup she brought home, and I loved looking at myself in the mirror every time I applied on my face. To me, it was all a fantasy.
As I grew older, I began to see makeup with love and discovered its magic. For me, makeup was no longer just a product, but a tool to boost people’s self-esteem (this is what it does for me). So, I decided to take this passion to a more professional level, and in 2018, I started studying at the Academia Francesa de Belleza in Bogotá, Colombia. I spent six months perfecting my skills and learning. It was there that I first learned special effects makeup with very basic techniques, but it was also where I decided I truly wanted to do this for the rest of my life.
In 2019, I moved to Florida and continued practicing at home, learning more and more techniques. But everything had changed, as it was also a completely different language and culture. Still, I decided to take the risk, and I knew I had to do my best because I had a big goal.
In 2021, I got a job at a makeup factory in Fort Pierce, where I had the opportunity to see the other side of makeup. I was able to see the creation of each product from scratch, and I swear I loved every part of it. I truly saw magic in the products.
In 2022, I enrolled at VAMP, where I can honestly say I had the best year of my life. I took both the beauty and special effects makeup courses, and this academy completely changed my life—100%. I even started getting jobs while I was still studying.
Now, I have gained experience in different areas of the industry, such as theater, theme parks, short films, photo shoots, and TV commercials.
My work has been present in different theater productions on Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts, such as Lucia Di Lammermoor, Daughter of the Regiment, and some others. I also got work with Blue Whale at the Howl-O-Scream event at SeaWorld, where I met incredible people who help me grow in the industry.
This entire journey has been wonderful, and I’ve enjoyed it so much.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I could say that the most “complicated” part for me has been the language change. I lived for 19 years in my country, where my communication was much more effective, and then coming here with a completely different language was a big challenge, and it still is. But every day I try to improve and learn more to make everything easier for myself, because in this industry, communication is key.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a makeup artist. I couldn’t say that I specialize in just one thing because I always try to be versatile with my work. I like doing everything from beautiful beauty makeup to gory, bloody cuts. What I love is applying all kinds of makeup, and every day I try to perfect every aspect of it. I’m known for always being myself. In every place I go, I am a very reserved and quiet person, but I’m always learning from others and giving my best in each of my makeup applications. I always try to leave a mark with my work, so that people know it was me who created that makeup.
What I’m most proud of is that I take things step by step, always trying to make sure each one is the right choice. Even though I’ve been paving my way for a few years, I feel that I’m heading in the right direction and I hope to go much further.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
There are several people who deserve credit in my life, starting with my family. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. My mom has been a key person because she’s always supporting me in everything. She brought the world of makeup into my life, and she’s the one who’s taught me how to live it. My stepfather saw the passion I have for makeup and believed in me. He helped me go to VAMP, where I met the three best makeup artists, in my opinion Brian, Ann and Osiris. I’ve always said I wish my brain could be a fusion of theirs. They are very smart and talented people.
And of course, I’ve always had the support of my friends—my best friend, who’s always been there for me, supporting me in every crazy decision, and the friends that this career has brought me, with whom I’ve learned and grown a lot.
