Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaidah Slaughter
Hi Jaidah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi, my name is Jaidah. I’m a graphic and web designer. I specialize in Brand identity, website design, album artwork and much more. I got started back in 2005, before the myspace days. Although I was teaching myself graphic design before Myspace, Myspace was ultimately the start of me learning how to code. I started off designing local people’s default photos, random people with a lot of friends that could promote my work as I was still in a practicing phase. Then I attracted the likes of DJ Rell, DJ Secret & DJ Smallz(Tampa), and the rest was history. Working with those infamous legends got my work on the pages of the rappers that were hot at the time: Armstrong, Ballgreezy, Klean, Caskey, Wes Fif, Shya Lamour, Legendary Bali, Stick 3000 and so many more. Working for them even got me on a song with the legendary group y’all all know, TREAL. (I can sing a little bit but that’s another story for another day haha)
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh boy, My favorite phrase I’ve been using all of my design career is “I’ve had some misses, I’ve had some hits but I wouldn’t be this successful in my career if I had more misses than hits”. It’s been a long journey. Trying to learn new things to stay ahead of the game. Enforcing boundaries within my business, you name it. I wouldn’t trade it for the world though.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a graphic and web designer. I specialize in Brand identity, Website Development, Album Artwork, Packaging design and so much more. I’m so proud of my work with a black owned ice creamery in Atlanta, releasing a stationery line for Creatives, and also releasing a new service, Website in a Weekend – Where clients can submit their content and pick a weekend to have their website fully designed and ready to go. What sets me apart from others? I’m a little old school when it comes to design. I don’t like to show my face, most of my clients don’t even know what my voice sounds like. Most don’t even know I’m a woman. People have told me the way I “post my work and go” they think Im an agency of white men. I think that’s crazy (haha). I tried the whole photoshoot to get myself out there like my peers and I didn’t feel comfortable. To be completely transparent, I just want to be known for my work/art. I get how people want to see who they’re investing it, like I do but if I told you how many clients just trust my work without knowing what I look or sound like you’d be surprised. I don’t want to post quotes, my face, any fun or sad relatable stories to appear relatable for anyones money. I think that’s what sets me apart. But this year, I’m opening my books for phone consultations and in-person meetings, Im excited!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I know this is going to sound crazy but daily life. I’m obsessed with poster design, movie posters, movie trailers, restaurant designs, billboards, and more. I get inspired just by walking into Target and looking at packaging. If I had to say online, it would be Behance. I also get inspired by the lovely and dope creatives I follow and follow me.
