Check Out Kia | Tyler Singleton | Wright’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kia | Tyler Singleton | Wright

Hi Kia | Tyler, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Our journey began in the chaos of organic chemistry, where we were both navigating the excitement and uncertainty of pursuing a future in healthcare. It quickly became clear that the path to medical school would be far more challenging than we’d anticipated, especially when we compared ourselves to others who seemed to have more resources and clearer paths.

Our paths crossed again in an Immunology course at a new university, where we realized that many students from backgrounds like ours were facing similar struggles. That’s when we decided to create something to help—an organization that could support students like us, who may not have had traditional resources but still had the drive to pursue medicine.

After graduation, during the uncertainty of our gap year, we made that dream a reality. Sisters In Med was born—a space where students at any stage of their journey can find mentorship, support, and a sense of community. What started as a simple idea has grown into a thriving network that spans across states, empowering students to overcome obstacles and achieve their dreams in healthcare.

Looking back, we’re proud of what we’ve built. The challenges we faced were the foundation for something bigger, and Sisters In Med wouldn’t exist without the dedication we’ve poured into it. Today, we’re honored to be part of a movement that’s helping the next generation of healthcare professionals feel seen, supported, and capable of achieving their goals, no matter how nontraditional their path may be.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building this organization has definitely not been a smooth road. The journey was filled with setbacks, moments of doubt, and times when giving up seemed like the easiest and most affordable choice. But those very struggles are what have made it meaningful. It was the perseverance through the tough times, the unwavering hope that kept us going, and the belief that we could make a difference despite the obstacles. Every challenge we faced, every moment of uncertainty, has become part of the foundation that makes Sisters In Med what it is today. It’s not just a support system—it’s a testament to resilience, to the dreams we held onto even when it felt like the odds were stacked against us, and to the belief that we could create a safe space for others who once walked the same path.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sisters In Med is an organization dedicated to empowering underrepresented minorities pursuing careers in medicine through mentorship, scholarships, community, networking, and faith. We focus on providing the support and resources needed to navigate the often challenging path to healthcare professions.

One of the key initiatives we offer is monthly volunteering opportunities, perfect for students looking to gain volunteering hours. Additionally, we run an annual mentorship program that pairs students with professionals in their desired fields. Our current mentorship cycle is already proving to be a great success, and we’re excited about the impact it’s having.

Beyond our formal mentorship programs, we are always available to offer advice and guidance to students seeking support in their journey. We believe in being a constant resource for anyone looking for mentorship, no matter where they are in their path.

Looking ahead, we have big plans to continue reaching out to the community. We’re excited to host back-to-school drives, offer scholarships, fundraise, and partner with other organizations to expand our reach and impact. By collaborating with like-minded groups, we aim to provide even more resources and opportunities to students who need them most. We’re committed to helping students not only survive, but thrive, as they pursue their dreams in healthcare.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to us is being able to help students who were once in our position. We’ve been through those endless nights of studying, the frustration and tears, the silence after reaching out to doctors’ offices—truly, we’ve been through it all. Because we’ve lived it, we understand how difficult the journey can be. That’s why, when a student tells us that we’ve helped them or made their journey even a little bit easier, it means the world to us.

What makes it even more meaningful is the sense of community we’ve built—Sisters In Med isn’t just an organization; it’s a family. It’s a space where students can lean on each other, share their struggles and victories, and know that they are never alone. That sense of belonging and mutual support is what drives us, and it’s what keeps us going. To us, our community is everything, and knowing that we can be a part of that support system for others is what truly matters.
