Today we’d like to introduce you to Jl Fields

JL, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After graduate school I worked in the nonprofit sector and higher education in Chicago and then New York. In my late 30’s I started eating vegetarian and at the age of 45 I went vegan. It was a big change and I really got into it. So much so that I started a blog and threw myself into creating recipes and writing about plant-based food … and found that enjoyed that way more than my day job. At the age of 47 I walked away from a 25+ year career to become a “professional vegan.” I had just signed the dotted line for my first book deal, went through a vegan education certification program, and I was ready to give it a shot – helping others navigate vegan eating and living. My husband and I moved to Colorado Springs where I started my health and wellness coaching practice, wrote eight vegan books, and launched a vegan cooking academy. In my spare time (ha!) I coordinated vegan events ranging from maker’s markets to a vegan restaurant week. Last year I moved to Florida where I continue to coach and to teach cooking skills.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a super-niche solopreneur business was challenging. I had no idea what I was doing. I quickly learned that it’s enticing to try to do everything when in fact specializing and remaining loyal to my big picture “purpose” would result in authenticity, client loyalty, and personal and professional joy. My niche – teaching vegan cooking classes – was the sweetspot.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about JL Fields Consulting, LLC (My “brand” on social media is JLgoesVegan?
I am a board-certified health and wellness coach specializing in vegan culinary and nutrition coaching. I work with vegans and non-vegans, guiding the process of incorporating more plant-based foods into their diets. With specialized diabetes prevention coach training, I work with clients working to prevent disease. My coaching expanded in 2024 to include supporting clients using GLP-1 (weight loss) medication to meet higher protein recommendations with plants. I hold coaching sessions online (Zoom) and on the beach (for walk-and-talk sessions) and I offer cooking classes online and in-person locally.

I’m proud of taking a leap and changing careers as I was approaching the age of 50. I would have never believed that in the first 10 years of my business, I would author eight cookbooks and star in a culinary show!
