Community Highlights: Meet Robert Brown of Avera Hair Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Brown

Hi Robert, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello I am Rob and I am the owner and stylist of Avera Hair Studio. Originally from the Philadelphia area I moved to Florida just like everyone else does for sunshine, no snow, and Disney. My career started at 14 where I joined a local vocational school’s Cosmetology program. By the time I was a Junior in high school I had received my license and was working Full time as a stylist and Part time High school student.

Wanting to become a hair stylist was due in part to my mother. In 2011 my mother was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer. I watched her get weaker during her treatments. In the beginning as she started to loose her hair I asked if I could shave her head. That was a moment that changed my life. I wanted to make sure everyone that sits in my chair feels beautiful and loves themselves no matter what was happening in their life.

I have had many opportunities to working in corporate salons as well as privately owned salons, but now I am taking on my greatest adventure. With the more than 7 years of experience and multiple educational moments in color, customer service, and extensions.

In 2022 I took the leap to open my own salon suite. I had worked in a suite located in Winter Garden then moved to one in Ocoee. On December 20th 2024 I purchased my salon located in Downtown Ocoee on McKey Street where I look forward to welcome the next generation of stylists to grow.

When looking at my future I chose this career to have freedom in creativity and life. This industry also has so many avenues that you can go down you can find your path and your specialty that you enjoy. I continue to have a passion in this industry to inspire, educate, and alter people’s lives for the better. I can’t wait to meet you at Avera Hair Studio!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
With my business the economy takes a huge play on how I can run my business. Every year products go up forcing me to raise prices. This causes me to loose 10% of clientele every time. Trust me I am blessed with what I have but it makes it harder to grow more. There is always self doubt as well, one day you love the job the next day you look into 9-5’s but if you stick with it the rewards out way the negatives. When I comes to working if the environment is not great it really brigs your moral down. Salon owners tend to show you this bright shiny “career” at their salon then ends up not being what was told to you at all. That is most of the time why stylists move salons. Also the inability to grow and move more forward then they are.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Avera Hair Studio?
At Avera Hair Studio, our mission is to empower guests to feel beautiful and confident by providing expert coloring/blonding services in a welcoming, personalized environment. We are dedicated to delivering high-quality, trend-forward hair care while fostering a sense of community and relaxation. Our commitment to creativity, sustainability, and continued education ensures that every client leaves feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to shine.

I am a Color Educator with Eufora International which is a company that uses 100 plant and flower extracts for both their color and their products. USDA 100% Certified pharmaceutical Aloe Vera gel is a main ingredient that pops up in their products often. I believe in Eufora so much that Avera’s name was created by mashing the words Aloe and Vera together. We later learned that Avera in Latin means “to be well” which then became out tagline. That’s what we want is for Avera’s Guests and staff to BE WELL.

I am really proud that my brand has grown from an idea to a salon suite to an 8 chair salon in the matter of 3 years.

I am most known for being a blonding specialist but I all around LOVE hair color. I am also know for creating hair in the most healthy way possible. I will not compromise hair for the end result. Hair should leave the salon better than when it came in. I am proud to say that every time my guests come back they tell me their hair has never felt better and has even grown.

When people book with our salon they receive 20% off their first service when they try us out.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I have always been older than my age. I didn’t get along with kids my age, I could have a better conversation with my teachers and elders then with other age groups. I was kind of an outcast but a social butterfly at the same time. I would be “cool” enough to talk to but not cool enough to have hanging around. My voice really shined when I started doing musical theater and really helped me find myself and understand the world more. I also didnt know until much older that I was gay and some of the feelings and internal issues I had as a child was based off that. I had know clue what gay ways it wasn’t spoken about in my life and to my knowledge i didn’t know anyone else who was. I always want to be an adult like I said wanted to drive before I could, Work before I could, move out. It’s no surprise to me that I am a workaholic now but there are days I wish I would have just enjoyed being a kid.
