Life & Work with Jeffrey Harris of East Orlando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Harris

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey to becoming a mental health counselor is deeply personal and shaped by my own experiences with emotional struggles. From a young age, I faced significant challenges, including feelings of isolation, low self-esteem, and intense emotional pain that often overshadowed my ability to find joy or purpose. At times, these struggles, including an eating disorder, felt overwhelming, and I didn’t know how to navigate them or seek the help I needed.

It wasn’t until I started college at the University of Central Florida that I took the crucial step of reaching out for support. That decision marked a turning point in my life. With the guidance of skilled mental health professionals, I began the difficult but transformative process of confronting my challenges. Over time, I developed healthier coping strategies, rebuilt my sense of self, and shifted from a place of self-doubt to one of hope and possibility.

Through this healing journey, I discovered my true calling: to become a counselor and help others work through the challenges that had once seemed insurmountable to me. My personal experiences deepened my passion for this field and fueled my commitment to supporting others on their own paths to recovery and self-discovery.

More than 20 years later, as a licensed mental health counselor, I am honored to guide individuals through their struggles and empower them to create meaningful change in their lives. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to use my education, personal insights, and professional experience to help others find healing and build the fulfilling lives they deserve.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to becoming a mental health counselor has had its challenges, but I view each one as an opportunity for growth. Early on, I encountered various personal obstacles that shaped my perspective and fueled my passion for helping others. When I finally decided to pursue a career in mental health, it wasn’t an easy decision. There were moments of doubt, uncertainty, and a lot of hard work involved, but each step forward taught me valuable lessons in perseverance and resilience.

The journey to becoming a licensed counselor required years of education, training, and self-reflection. There were times when balancing school, internships, and my own personal growth felt overwhelming, but I was driven by a clear sense of purpose. With every challenge, I became more committed to my work and my mission to help others.

Looking back, I’m grateful for the obstacles I’ve overcome. They’ve strengthened my empathy and deepened my understanding of the challenges others face. Each experience has contributed to my ability to guide clients through their own journeys of healing and self-discovery. While the road has not always been smooth, it’s been incredibly rewarding, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m deeply passionate about supporting individuals in achieving emotional balance and overall mental well-being. As a mental health counselor, my work is centered around empowering clients to understand themselves more deeply, navigate life’s challenges, and create meaningful, lasting change. I specialize in helping individuals manage anxiety, navigate relationship challenges, boost self-esteem, and navigate life transitions. My approach is grounded in creating a compassionate, nonjudgmental space where clients feel safe to explore their feelings and work toward healing. I also take a holistic approach, recognizing that emotional, mental, and physical health are all interconnected.

One of the areas I’m particularly known for is my ability to help clients cultivate mindfulness and self-compassion—two powerful tools for managing stress and promoting overall well-being. I integrate techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based practices, and solution-focused therapy to provide clients with tangible strategies for reducing anxiety, building resilience, and fostering emotional growth.

What I’m most proud of is seeing the positive transformation in my clients. It’s incredibly rewarding to witness someone regain their confidence, find inner peace, and live a life aligned with their values. I also take great pride in creating a therapeutic environment where clients feel empowered to explore their challenges and take actionable steps toward creating the life they desire.

What sets me apart is my commitment to providing personalized, holistic care. I don’t just focus on addressing immediate issues; I take the time to understand each client’s broader context—their values, goals, and life experiences. By tailoring my approach to fit each person’s unique needs, I’m able to guide them toward lasting, transformative change. I believe strongly in the power of the therapeutic relationship and the importance of building trust and collaboration with clients.

I’m also proud of the work I’ve done through Balanced Healing, LLC. the practice I started in 2020. Through Balanced Healing LLC, I offer counseling services, workshops, and resources designed to help individuals integrate mental health practices into their daily lives, fostering balance and clarity. Whether through one-on-one counseling or group sessions, I’m dedicated to helping people find sustainable paths to healing and fulfillment.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I truly believe that my success, both personally and professionally, is a result of the incredible support and encouragement I’ve received from a number of people throughout my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the love, wisdom, and guidance of those who believed in me and helped me along the way.

First and foremost, my family has been an integral part of my journey. My mother, Annette, has always been a source of unwavering support and encouragement. She’s taught me the value of hard work, perseverance, and compassion. My brothers, Richard and Brian, introduced me to fitness and a healthy lifestyle, which has not only been a crucial part of my own well-being but has also influenced my approach to helping others achieve balance in their lives. My little sister, Alana, has been a constant source of inspiration. Wanting to be a positive role model for her has driven me to work harder and stay focused, knowing that my success could inspire her too. And my father, Keith, always offered practical advice, reminding me to stay focused on my goals and trust the process. Their support has been foundational, and I know I can always turn to them for guidance and encouragement.

I’ve also had incredible mentors and friends who played key roles in my success. Mark Zeiler, a former colleague and friend, has been a huge source of guidance and support. His encouraging words and insightful advice have helped me through many tough moments, and I truly appreciate the direction he’s provided. My former roommate at UCF, Brandon Player, has been another pillar of support. His thoughtful advice and perspective always helped me stay grounded, and his friendship has meant so much to me. Both Mark and Brandon have been invaluable cheerleaders, reminding me that I’m capable of achieving my goals and pushing me to be the best version of myself.

Having such a strong network of people—family, mentors, colleagues, and friends—has made all the difference in my journey. I’m incredibly grateful for the role each of them has played in my life and in the success of my business. Knowing that I have these amazing people cheering me on gives me the confidence to keep moving forward and to offer the same kind of support to my clients. They are my foundation, and I know I can always rely on them for guidance and encouragement.
