Meet Gwen Kowalski of Downtown Orlando

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gwen Kowalski

Hi Gwen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Retired after 41 years. Moved from house to apt in downtown Orlando. Always dabbled with plants and saw many small businesses with dying plants. This was during end of COVID. World felt negative and wondered if businesses were open to creating, updating and maintaining their plants, which was my way of sharing joy and happiness. I talked to many places and began developing clients. Named business Gwen’s Community Garden Service. First year did not know what I was doing business wise but began developing knowledge and experience about the business and a profit. Hired and trained PT workers. Work time is primarily 8-11 am before businesses open. Many of my clients and their customers have commented how beautiful the arrangements are which makes the work more satisfying.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not knowing all license and business costs upfront. Not knowing how to make a profit in the beginning. Plants dying too fast due to the extreme Florida heat the last 2 summers.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I was very artistic as a child but did not think it would provide a livable income so workedin a totally different area. After being a wife, mother, grandmother, and professional for 41 years, having this plant business has allowed my artistic skills to re-emerge. This has happened through the use of different plant and planter textures, colors, shapes and sizes.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Initially my husband and grown kids thought this was a short term hobby and questioned why I pursued this after retiring. Now they turn to me for plant advice and support and praise my job site results. Friends say they are amazed that my small business is still thriving.
