Hidden Gems: Meet Jay Henderson of Flow Shooting Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Henderson

Hi Jay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Basketball has been a central part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was fortunate to play at a high level, competing in college and professionally. Throughout my journey, I developed a deep understanding of the game, particularly the art of shooting. I realized that proper shooting mechanics weren’t always emphasized enough in player development, and that inspired me to create Flow Shooting Academy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing top-tier basketball camps/training and life skills education to young athletes.

One of the biggest inspirations for Flow Shooting Academy came from seeing various NBA players charge hundreds of dollars for their camps. I wanted to do something different—something that gave every kid a chance, regardless of financial situation. That’s why all of our camps are 100 percent free. No athlete should be denied the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop just because of money.

But Flow Shooting Academy is about more than just basketball. At every camp, we make sure kids also learn about nutrition, mental health, and technology—three key areas that shape their future both on and off the court. We want them to leave with not just better shooting skills, but also the knowledge and tools to take care of their bodies, strengthen their minds, and understand the growing role of technology in sports and life.

What started as a dream, has now grown into a full-scale movement, including various camps in different cities, international camps, coaching certification programs, and plans for our own facility. I’ve been fortunate to have incredible mentors and supporters along the way, and I’m excited about the future. The goal is to continue making a lasting impact—on and off the court.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. Any time you’re building something with a real purpose, especially as a nonprofit organization, there are going to be challenges. One of the biggest struggles has been securing funding and resources to keep our camps 100 percent free. Unlike traditional camps that charge high fees, we rely on donations, sponsorships, and partnerships to make this possible. Finding the right people and companies who truly believe in our mission and want to support it has been a journey in itself.

Another challenge has been shifting the mindset around player development. Many young athletes—and even coaches—are drawn to flashy skills and quick results rather than focusing on fundamentals like shooting. Educating players, parents, and coaches about the importance of proper shooting mechanics and overall player development takes time, but it’s something we’re committed to.

Logistically, expanding our camps to different cities and even internationally has its own hurdles. Coordinating travel, facilities, and ensuring every camp provides not just basketball training, but also education on nutrition, mental health, and technology takes a lot of effort. We also see kids from different backgrounds, some facing real-life struggles beyond basketball, and that adds another layer to what we do.

Despite the challenges, I wouldn’t change a thing. Every obstacle has reinforced why Flow Shooting Academy exists. Seeing the impact we’ve made on kids—whether it’s helping them improve their game, boosting their confidence, or giving them access to opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise—makes it all worth it. The journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s been meaningful, and we’re just getting started.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Flow Shooting Academy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing young athletes by providing high-level basketball training—100 percent free. While we focus heavily on teaching proper shooting mechanics, our camps and programs go far beyond basketball. We emphasize nutrition, mental health, and technology to ensure that every athlete we work with is developing not just as a player, but as a person.

At Flow Shooting Academy, our mission is to provide every child, regardless of their background, with the opportunity to reach their full potential through basketball. By combining professional training with mentorship, we aim to foster leadership, perseverance, and integrity in our participants. We envision a world where youth from all walks of life embrace their strengths, discover a passion for the game, and emerge as positive leaders in their communities. Through our commitment to inclusivity and personal growth, we strive to revolutionize youth development—one shot at a time.

What sets us apart is our commitment to accessibility and quality. A lot of basketball camps and training programs come with high price tags, making them unattainable for many kids. We believe no athlete should be denied the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop due to financial limitations. That’s why all of our camps are completely free, giving kids from all backgrounds access to elite training, mentorship, and education.

We’re also proud of the international reach of Flow Shooting Academy. Our programs extend beyond the U.S., providing opportunities for young athletes worldwide to receive top-tier training and mentorship. As we continue to expand, we’re focused on making a lasting global impact.

From a brand perspective, what makes Flow Shooting Academy unique is that we are more than basketball. We’re building a movement that teaches life skills, discipline, and confidence. Our upcoming facility will allow us to expand even further and offer a wide range of programs for all kids and athletes to benefit from.

At the end of the day, we want people to know that Flow Shooting Academy is about impact. We’re not just helping kids become better shooters—we’re helping them become better people. That’s what makes this bigger than basketball.
