Inspiring Conversations with Melissa Rabell of Reinventing Hope Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Rabell

Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story? That’s a big question. But if there’s one thing I know, it’s that every step—every hardship, every fall—led me to who I am and what I do today.

I grew up in an environment marked by instability, addiction, and neglect. Without realizing it, I shaped my identity around survival—finding my worth in people-pleasing, a lack of boundaries, and becoming whoever others needed me to be. I didn’t have the language for trauma, neglect, or abuse, so I carried their weight in silence, prioritizing everyone but myself until I reached the brink of burnout.

For years, I didn’t believe I was valuable. That belief cost me more than I could have imagined. I walked away from a music career before it had a chance to begin. I floundered in jobs and relationships, constantly searching for something I couldn’t name. I lost my father unexpectedly to addiction. I married someone struggling with the same demons. And perhaps most telling—I broke off an engagement just a month before the wedding because I couldn’t accept the unconditional love his family offered. It was foreign to me, misaligned with the chaos I had always known.

I spent my life trying to be “strong,” trying to be “the best,” but in reality, I was exhausted, sacrificing myself at every turn. I had always dismissed therapy as a joke, yet when I had nowhere else to turn, I took a chance. Instead of running from my past in fear and shame, I faced it with compassion.

Through therapy, deep self-exploration, and a commitment to breaking generational cycles, I found something I never expected—purpose. A month before grad school started, I took a leap of faith and enrolled. Healing became my foundation, and becoming a trauma-informed therapist was the next step in my evolution.

Now, as the founder of Reinventing Hope Counseling, I help others do what I once thought was impossible—reclaim their lives, balance self-care with compassion, and move beyond survival into true fulfillment. Healing led me to leadership, and today, I walk alongside others as they redefine their own stories—this time, on their own terms.
This year, I had the opportunity to be part of Heal to Lead, a powerful collaboration of women sharing their stories of resilience, transformation, and hope. Being involved in this project reaffirmed what I’ve always believed—our stories have the power to heal not just ourselves, but others as well.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. Healing from trauma is never simple, and one of the hardest parts is grieving what you didn’t know, what you missed out on, and forgiving yourself for the pain you caused along the way.

Becoming a therapist has been far more involved than I ever imagined, and the road has been anything but smooth. Beyond the tests, internships, and supervision, it’s not just about learning theories and techniques—it’s about continuously doing my own inner work, challenging my patterns, and staying present for others while still holding space for myself.

I’ve worked with many business owners and healthcare professionals, and time and time again, I’ve seen how trauma brings us to our work. I’ve faced imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and the emotional toll of holding space for deep pain while navigating my own healing. There were moments when I questioned whether I was capable of doing this work—especially when my own triggers and past wounds resurfaced.

But the best therapists, I believe—often called wounded healers—know and continue to evolve from their own story. I can’t help others if I’m not willing to be real about emotions, pain, and the complexity of healing. I didn’t grow up understanding dissociation, trauma, or the impact of living without support. But now I do, and that knowledge has reshaped everything.

Building Reinventing Hope Counseling has come with its own growth and challenges—learning to run a business, setting boundaries with my time, hiring, navigating insurance, and balancing my passion for helping others with my own well-being. I’ve seen firsthand the struggles entrepreneurs face, and I’ve had to continuously learn (and relearn) how to delegate, prioritize, and embrace imperfection.

Despite the struggles, every challenge has reinforced why I do this work. Growth isn’t comfortable, but it’s always worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of Reinventing Hope Counseling. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Reinventing Hope Counseling is a trauma-informed therapy practice specializing in helping individuals reclaim their lives from the deep impacts of relational and childhood trauma. We work with clients who have often had to become “strong for everyone”—those who, out of necessity, developed patterns of toughness and people-pleasing, placing others’ needs first while neglecting their own well-being. These unhealed patterns show up in every aspect of life, affecting identity, relationships, self-worth, and purpose, leaving individuals feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and disconnected from themselves.

We recognize that trauma isn’t just about surviving—it’s about unlearning the survival mechanisms that were once necessary but no longer serve you. Our integrative approach blends mind-body healing with evidence-based practices, creating a personalized path toward healing, self-discovery, and lasting transformation. We guide individuals from a place of survival to one of thriving—reconnecting with their true selves, healing past wounds, and building a meaningful, fulfilling life.

What sets us apart is our deep commitment to those who carry the weight of being the “strong one”—the individuals who have learned to shoulder the emotional burden of others, often at the cost of their own well-being. We provide a compassionate, non-judgmental space where clients feel seen, heard, and empowered to break free from old patterns and rewrite their stories. Our goal isn’t just symptom management, but true healing, helping you put your well-being first and live the life you were always meant to lead.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of the safe and transformative space we’ve created—a place where clients feel supported in doing the hard work of healing through a mix of modalities, fun, and exploration. At Reinventing Hope, therapy isn’t just about coping with trauma; it’s about redefining your life, overcoming the shadows of the past, and embracing the fullness of who you are meant to be.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I struggled with dissociation, so many of my childhood memories are blurry. I wasn’t truly myself and didn’t have the space to play or simply be a kid—survival came first.

As I’ve healed, I’ve discovered how much of my true self was buried beneath those survival mechanisms, and how adulthood can heal the past. I still love things like laughing and music, but I’ve become more introverted, finding joy in the small things—like walks, hummingbirds, and yoga. I’ve also embraced new experiences, like taking guitar lessons and actually growing (not killing, like I thought I would) plants. For years, I believed I had to be someone I wasn’t to fit in or be loved. But I’ve learned that embracing my authentic self, without fear of judgment, leads to deeper, more meaningful connections. Being yourself doesn’t lead to abandonment; it leads to finding your people and a beautiful life you never imagined.

Healing isn’t linear—it’s messy. But through small acts of self-expression, like guitar lessons or spending time in nature, I’ve learned that growth and joy can coexist. Now, I embrace all parts of myself and walk this journey with my clients, helping them shed old patterns and step into their authentic selves.
