Personal Goals

To become a nationally recognized author and a full-time father.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
– Started drinking when I was 13 (1992) – finally over-coming addiction to pills and alcohol in 2009. Stayed clean since.
– Divorce in 2004 after losing our baby, lost my father to cancer in 2013. Been homeless a couple of times.
– Work / life balance (bringing my kids to work with me as a (50/50 dad)
– Being put in leadership positions even when I’ve tried to avoid it or “live small”
– Leadership struggles even when I did embrace the role
– Business meteoric rises (working 100 hour weeks) and meteoric failures. Followed by having to reinvent myself a few times.

🙂

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I started out as a graphic design student when I found out I was going to be a dad. I started in the creative field but it open so many doors after that. After a year of working for a design firm as an intern, I branched out and started my own freelancing firm. Owning my business was quite the wake up call. I now had to learn 100 new skillsets to survive. After 20+ years, I get to consult. Nowadays it’s less creative, but I get to problem solve (which requires creativity in an intellectual way. To keep things simple and moving forward I focus on auditing systems, correcting them, and making sure they all run smoothly :). Making $3m dollars a year is great – unless you’re spending $4M to get there. Making $2 million a year is better, if you only have to spend $1m to get there. <3

What does success mean to you?
Good question. It different for everyone, but for me I’d say putting in the least amount of effort to get the most amount of results. This way you can scale. If you’re stressed out, unhealthy, and never see your family and THEN your business scales after that? You’re in a world of trouble.

But if you can take it easy, work efficiently, while maintaining personal and relationship health, you’re on the right track. Then scaling isn’t so painful, it’s pleasant.
