Meet Morgan Brooks of WEEKI WACHEE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Brooks.

Morgan Brooks

Hi Morgan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My family and I breed and show our golden retrievers all around the state, competing in the Royal Canin show in Orlando and Westminster in December each year. Our oldest son competes in Junior Showmanship with his goldens and his vizsla. He is a Top 5 Junior Handler in the US, qualifying for all events he sets his mind to. Our youngest son enjoys the performance side of dog shows and enjoys working the goldens in the field with Rushe Retrievers.

The American Kennel Club offers awards for top juniors (anyone under 18) competitions in all of the events they offer.
The Mid Florida Golen Retriever club keeps everyone interested and educated as well as supporting many organizations that promote the love and competition behind pure bred dog sports.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
With any passion, the start of this is always the hardest. My kids are fortunate to have a built in mentor to help guide them to the top. For anyone else who is looking to get started, your breeder is going to be your best resource. Even if it is not a sport they compete in, they would be able to guide you.

We tried all of the sports and fell in love with the beauty pageant part, conformation. This is where the judge critiques and places the dogs based on the way they read the written breed standard provided by AKC.

In field events, the dogs are judged on how well they navigate the field to find the bird and deliver to hand.

In agility it is how well the dog and handler go through the course. Dock diving, how far the dog jumps. Style isnt judged in these events, but it is what keeps is coming back!!

AKC also offers titles you can get online by submitting videos. You can be as competitive as you’d like.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
IN breeding, we are most known for the temperament behind our dogs. They are bred and raised to be “fool proof”, handing you a well rounded puppy at 8 weeks old that you can bring into your family with little worries.

In the world of conformation, I am most known for my help with junior showmanship They are the future of our sport, we need them to have the same passion for the sport I had many years ago.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
This is a hurry up and wait game. We plan and plan and plan and then we have to train, groom, condition, wait for the right show and the right judge to show off all of our hard work to.

Everyone has an opinion, we are asking the judge for theirs. Learn to accept it and move forward. You are always taking home the best dog!! There will be another day.
