Life & Work with Branson Grant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Branson Grant.

Hi Branson, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Branson Grant since I was young I loved superheroes. It was in 2008 I began to write what would be the outline of my story somewhat based on my life and people I knew. I began going to Comic cons to meet other artists and writers who were in the industry who worked for DC and Marvel comics, talking with them I gain great insight to how the industry worked and what it would take to work for a major company, but even with all there help I was still having a problem writing the story just wasn’t coming to me and I began to get frustrated. Then at an even I got to meet Ethan Van Sciver who had worked on 2 of my favorite books that I was reading at the time Green Lantern and The Flash it was in that encounter I told him I was having trouble writing and he told me to put myself in the story and that every character needs to be as important as the main character or there just going to sound flat, you don’t know who’s going to be your audience’s favorite character so they all need to be written like it. Suddenly it was like I was hit by lightning I went back and completely redid my entire story and the characters, I went from barely being able to write to having thousands of pages and notes and storyboard. The advice he gave me truly put me on the path to where I am now and in 2020 I released my first book The Protector saga part one. It was in that time I wasn’t sure if I just wanted to do comics or a novel and I thought why not do both so i was still going to cons at the time talking to artist it was at one I ran into Matt Santorelli who was a inker on another Green Lantern run I was reading I had do a mock up of one of the pages he had done with my Character and he thought it was great I told him I loved the artist Carlo Barberi who had originally done the work and I thought he would be perfect for my project and he told me I should reach out to him to see if he was available so I did and surprisingly he was and happy to join the project. The was my first project and I had two major players in the industry wanting to work on it with me this was a dream come true shortly after I got in contact with a colorist named Werner Sancher who had worked with Carlo on other projects and he was also available, I couldn’t believe I had a whole team on The Protector saga comic. As the pages came out things began to pick up but Matt became busy with other projects which I understood completely but luckily I had already been in contact with another inker who had also worked with Carlo on other projects Walden Wong who has done some absolutely amazing work. After that the team was set and we’ve been in development of the comic while I’m working on the second book. I also was joined by a incredible B cover artist who also did my book cover Dominic Glover

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At times things seem to go so fast like I couldn’t believe this was my life but there are definitely hardships in this field, late nights long hours time away from your family and kids. After the first release and I met my wife i really needed to take time to make my family a priority so I took time off from the project to focus on my wife and kids to really enjoy life with them. Other things like money at times got in the way because being an independent writer and comic writer when you have a team can get expensive while raising a family. But no matter what my team has been understanding and extremely passionate with me and this project as well as my fans.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Well I’m mostly know for being the writer and creative designer of The Protector saga a book that came out in 2020 and a comic that goes along with it that is in development. I’m mostly proud of my incredible team on this project and the stellar work there all doing it’s truly one of the most amazing comics I’ve seen, the details in every page makes you feel like you’re in the world I can’t imagine anyone else working on this project. What sets us apart from anyone else I feel we’ve all come together in a way that makes us better each story makes us all want to do better at our jobs and it pushes us in a way we didn’t think was possible

What were you like growing up?
I’ve always loved superheroes and art the first thing I can remember drawing was Micheal Keaton Batman and seeing all my friends in kindergarten being blown away and it was at that moment I knew I wanted to draw and create superheroes. Years later my 4th grade teacher took a bunch of my drawings and didn’t tell me why months later she called me up to the front of the classroom and I thought I was in trouble but she read a letter that was a response apparently she sent my drawing to Disney and they wrote back telling me to keep up the good work and i might have a future working with them one of the greatest days of my life as a kid to hear that.
