Community Highlights: Meet Thomas Faucette Jr. of Slarutan Cosmetic Laboratory

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Faucette Jr. 

Hi Thomas, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I retired as a customer service manager in the US postal service and launched a hair care Distribution Business in 2008, servicing salons, barber shops, and cosmetology schools. In 2013 I launched Mane Stream Hair and Beauty Expo offering educational classes with the focus being business and skill enhancement. The Expo also attracted some of the beauty industries top educators from across the country to participate in teaching classes and competitions. It was at the expo where I was recruited to be the VP of Operations for a large manufacturing company in Atlanta Ga. For 8 years I worked with the chemist, production staff, and sales department. 

I noticed smaller businesses were not given the same opportunities or attention as the larger clients, because of large MOQ and startup cost. 

I’ve always routed for the underdog and small business owners in the private label industry is definitely the underdog, and I wanted to level the playing field. I always felt if you want to make a difference, you can’t just talk about it, you have to take action. I launched Slarutan Cosmetic Laboratory LLC in Tampa Fl February 2021, with the main focus being to help smaller businesses launch their product line, offering smaller MOQ and working with the client to scale up. To assist my clients further, I authored a book title Shut Up And Close The Deal, the art of Selling, to assist my customers on how to sell to and retain customers. 

I truly feel like I’m operating in my purpose. It was by the grace of God who blessed me with the best staff a company could ask for. Slarutan Cosmetic lab staff has truly bought into the vision, by ensuring we make quality products, using the best ingredients the cosmetic industry has to offer. It’s all in the name, Slarutan is Naturals spelled backwards. 

Once the word got out there is a new manufacturer and lab offering low MOQs, our business has taken off and we welcome it. 

I can’t wait to see one of our smaller clients become the next million-dollar company. 

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. I spent over 20 years in the Post Office. Not having any background in the Cosmetic industry was a huge disadvantage. Because of my competitive nature, I challenged myself to learn everything about hair and what are the best ingredients for all hair types. Opening Slarutan Cosmetic Laboratory was probably my biggest challenge. Not having a mentor to guide me on the does and don’ts, not knowing all the regulations required to open a lab put me in a huge financial hole. My budget was based on me opening for business in Feb 2021 because of all the certifications I wasn’t aware I needed to officially open, I had all this overhead to cover and I wasn’t able to make any money to pay bills. The debt was mounting up and my dream of having a lab was starting to become a nightmare. With a lot of prayer and perseverance, I was finally approved by the state to open my doors for business in May of 2021. My prayers were answered, after my launch clients started rolling in a we never looked back.
