Daily Inspiration: Meet Monica Pollard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Pollard.

Hi Monica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My interest in photography is most likely rooted in the thrill of going to Eckerd’s pharmacy to drop off and pick up photo film as a child with my parents. I remember asking for my first camera when I was still in elementary school and filling the rolls of film with redundant photos of anything that caught my fancy – I think I took at least a dozen photos of a solar system diagram at the Science Center! In college, I took a few photography classes and named the DSLR I was borrowing, Paolo, which is where things started to take off. I started out taking senior portraits for my friends and some occasional engagement shots but it wasn’t until 2015 when I booked my first wedding (thanks to my dad advertising my photography to a car salesman who was a fellow graduate of my alma mater) and realized that I could be doing much more than just having this be a hobby. I have since incorporated and regularly capture a variety of memories for people around Central Florida. So far, I have covered weddings from Spring Hill to St. Augustine, with two weddings coming up in Jacksonville this fall!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Overall, it has been a smooth road but there have definitely been some bumps along the way. Figuring out how to incorporate and build a business was a challenge! I’m sure that there are many things I could have done better (in terms of advertising and marketing myself) but so far, I am lucky and am grateful for the opportunities that come my way. This is a “fun job” for me. No matter how hard the day is and the challenges that came up, I always make it home happy and feeling proud of myself and my work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
For my photography business (MTP Photography, LLC), I’m primarily covering weddings, family portraits, and graduation photos but I’ve also taken my fair share of maternity photos, proposals, and engagement sessions! I don’t know that I have a favorite session type because my goal is always to create realistic photos that capture my subjects. Outside of some general retouching and color correction, I shy away from color/photo filters. My clients come to me because I am striving for authenticity and have frequently said that they prefer candid shots which is fun for me as well as a challenge!

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice for people who are just starting out is to find what style truly makes you passionate about your art. What is it that you are trying to capture and how can you make yourself stand out? With photography, there are so many people who have started businesses and the competition for clients is high. The wonderful thing about this business though is that with a pool so large, it gives you room to truly be yourself and make your product unique. You don’t need to match anyone else’s style. Also, don’t be afraid to promote yourself! As someone who still struggles with this, I wish I had known more about how to promote my work – even just to friends and family – when I was just starting.
