Today we’d like to introduce you to Andre Hayes.
Hi Andre, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
How did I get started? To be honest, it was because of a girl I was crushing on in college (Florida A&M University). One “sad” day in June of 2014, she told me that my abs were fading. At the time, I had prided myself on having abs, so that completely destroyed my ego. That following week, I began working out like crazy! If I remember correctly, I was doing 2-a-days at least 5 days out of the week. Soon after, my roommates began to tag along, then my next door neighbor, who I consider to be my first official client. Just to clarify, I was only trying to get my abs back; becoming a trainer was by pure accident, but that’s how I got started.
So for the next 3 years, I hosted free boot camps to not only help people reach their goals, but to also learn how to train altogether. Everything was trial and error. I remember learning how to create graphics, building my first website, running a mile to campus for the sessions and running back home, spending rent money on equipment, staying up late reading and watching videos about training, and experimenting with different diets and workouts so I could better service/advise my clients. Finally, in 2017, I found my niche, networked properly, and built up enough business to quit my job. This was the year that I was featured in FAMU’s magazine, JOURNEY, I began offering 1-on-1 training, made $1000 within a month, and registered my business as an LLC, Since 2017, everything has been aligning, especially since moving here to Orlando in 2019. The fitness world here is huge. Simply being in the right place at the right time has blessed me with opportunities to network and partner with professional athletes, coaches, and trainers, gym owners, and other upcoming trainers.
Where am I now? I am now 8 years in the world of fitness, training at Look Who’s Fit (@LookWhosFit), learning how to manage and operate a gym, and maintaining my abs that I vowed to never let “fade” again.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Looking back at it, the journey to become a trainer was quite easy. It’s easy to learn information about the body and practice the movements. Becoming a trainer simply takes time and commitment. Being an entrepreneur was the hard part. No one tells you about the long nights and early mornings. No one warns you that your funds will hit an extreme low and that you’ll have to decide between paying rent/utilities or buying food. No one tells you that you’ll have to sacrifice relationships, both friends and family, to reach certain goals. No one warns you of the criticism and ridicule. No one tells you that chasing your dreams takes blood, sweat, tears, energy, money, and time. In comparison to Tallahassee, Fl, I would say that Orlando is more for those who have already established their business, understand business, and/or have already done the proper networking to have a successful launch. When I first got here, I was a bit discouraged; I actually stopped training for most of 2019. I ended up working at Planet Fitness, which showed me why I needed to get back on my grind. The discouragement came from not knowing anyone here. It came from doubt, because I saw the trainers who were already established as competition instead of possible mentors and partners.
One thing we all say is that my overall journey is that is has all been worth it. I discovered my passion. I discovered who I was and who I wanted to become. I became comfortable with myself enough to be authentic and transparent with the world. I now know Andre Hayes for who he is.
We’ve been impressed with |AllGoodSweat|, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
|AllGoodSweat| focuses on teaching our members how to achieve and sustain their fitness goals through our GoodSweat and R.A.W Energy training programs. Our main goal is to build the self-confidence of our clients, by focusing on their abilities and not the scale. Fitness comes with its own set of obstacles that must be overcome to achieve certain goals. Imagine not being able to complete a proper push-up, but after a few training sessions you’re able to knockout 15-20 at a time. This simple milestone translates to so many different aspects of your life. So now when you’re facing a different obstacle, maybe something at school or in the workplace, you think back to when you thought that push-ups were hard and/or impossible, but now they’re just a warm-up. It’s the mindset of being definite not relative that we push. We encourage our clients to define themselves and not let their situations, their circumstances, or other people do it, then live up to it. My favorite example of this is Muhammad Ali. He declared and defined himself as “The Greatest,” so in every interview, workout, spar, and match he performed as such. Eventually no one could deny his greatness.
What am I most proud of? I’d have to say that I’m most proud of the fact that my brand/business has lasted this long. I’m proud of the fact that I’ve been able to impact so many people over these years. To be specific though…a few years ago, to end Black History Month, we hosted the “Give Black Community Cookout,” where we offered free food to FAMU students and residents of the surrounding neighborhoods…that was definitely one for the books.
|AllGoodSweat| offers 1-on-1 and small group training, Monday-Saturday. This Summer we will be looking for interns; specifically people that want to become trainers. We will teach our training methods and provide opportunities for hands-on experience.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the fact that things are spread apart. Like you can “leave” the city, without actually leaving the city. I love the endless business and networking opportunities/events that occur here. I love that there’s always something to do for entertainment. Even though Orlando doesn’t have a beach, the abundance of lakes suffices. To be honest, I don’t really have any dislikes other than the traffic.
