Today we’d like to introduce you to Vel Johnson.
Hi Vel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story starts on a military base in Germany, growing up as an Army brat of two amazing parents. As a kid, I thought it was wonderful that my family and I got stationed at a different base every 2-3 years. While growing up, I was emerged in new cultures and made friends with people from all over the world.
My late father was awarded the Bronze Star for heroic service during two tours of duty in Viet Nam. As you might imagine, there was a fair amount of discipline in our household. But I would not trade anything for my upbringing.
I have always believed that what you do for a living should allow you to give back to the world through the skills, talents, and abilities that have been given to you. As far back as I can remember, I have had a passion for solving problems and helping people.
A large part of the reason that becoming an entrepreneur was important to me, was because I believed that it would allow me to make more effectual changes in the lives of people in a more direct and hands on manner.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Before starting my company, I took a leap of faith and changed the entire landscape of my life. I left what most would consider a great career path and salary in the political arena, sold my beautiful home, and started as an entrepreneur in a city where I didn’t know anyone. This was indeed a challenge, but I believe that if nothing is ventured, nothing can be gained.
Some would say building a business in the middle of what is called “the Great Recession” (2007-2009) was crazy. But legacy building is essential to me, and I have always wanted to chart my own course. I also want to be remembered as someone who cared about others and took the time to help make a difference in this world.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Many would be surprised to know I was a contestant in the Miss National Florida Teenager Pageant in 1984. I had just graduated from Barbizon Modeling School and was excited to receive the invitation to compete with approximately 75 other girls from across Florida. I was proud to be selected as “Winner of the Speech and Essay Competition” and an overall “Finalist” in the prestigious pageant. Getting sponsors to support me and focusing on volunteer community service achievement that would capture the judges’ attention was hard work. But I did it and received an offer from the Central Florida Blood Bank for my first paying job because of what they saw as my dedication to community enrichment. Participating in the Miss National Florida Teenager Pageant was a character-building experience and taught me the importance of volunteer service. Having the opportunity to compete in a state-wide pageant helped empower me to achieve educational and personal goals. It contributed to the confidence that every girl needs while growing up.
