An Inspired Chat with Nick Savage

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nick Savage. Check out our conversation below.

Nick, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
This is actually a really hard question. I think that there’s so much going on in the world, it’s hard to find external joy in a lot of things right now. I used to embroider and do puzzles (I still do), but they aren’t bringing me joy right now. I do play video games and run a guild on Dungeons & Dragons online, but even that isn’t calling me. I think, if anything brings me external joy, it’s spending time with my wife and cats. The irony in that is that we played the video game together. But I wanted to address this because I know this feeling is only temporary, and if anyone reading this feels the same, just know that this too shall pass.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Nick Savage. I am a full-time author and small business owner. My book series covers the modern rockstar romance in one and contemporary sci-fi in the other. My small business is a t-shirt company where I hand-paint shirts with a custom blend of glow-in-the-dark paints. The clothes are machine washable and can go in the dryer. I do have a website for both aspects. www.TheAuthorNickSavage.com and www.SavageCultGlowCo.com

Right now, I am getting ready for a busy convention season. Ancient City Con, Ultra Con in West Palm Beach, and Scaradise keep me busy for a month and a half leading up to them. While I am always looking to create new shirt designs, I am currently writing a book about a lost love/reignited flame, but all the characters are constantly messing up.

November 21st, the fifth and final novel in the main storyline of The West Haven Undead, called The Grey Fairy Anomaly, will release.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
The relationship that most shaped the way I see myself is my current one. Before we got married, I had huge trust issues. After an argument, she told me that I was either going to trust her or I wasn’t, and not to waste her time. While it seems like a simple thing to be told, it was her lack of excuses or sidestepping the point and addressing it head-on that flipped some switch in my head. It was a pivotal moment that undid decades of bad relationships.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I think there’s a moment in every novel I write when I almost give it all up. Something about the stress and the need to be perfect in the story and the structure becomes too much. When that happens, I have to force myself to take a few steps back, breathe, and say that it will all be all right. It’s hard a lot of the time and even harder at others, but the end result is definitely worth it

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes and no. There are definitely parts of me that come through in my public persona. I think the biggest difference is that in my personal life, I say things knowing I can reexplain them if it doesn’t come out the way I first intended them to. In the public eye, everything anyone says is scrutinized, so I have to better form my sentences. I will say that I do come off as far more of a fun person in public than I actually am. I am quite a boring person in private.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Always. People who only give their best because they know they will receive praise for it aren’t doing it because they want to truly be good at whatever they are doing; they are only giving their best because they need outside validation. There’s a sense of altruism that needs to be held onto. A sense that what we do is important, regardless of it anyone acknowledges it or not, but that the intrinsic worth of what we do is why we give it our all every time.
